With Uber you can book rides from participating drivers directly from your phone, tablet or computer. To check if the service is available in your area (or any area you may travel to), use the tool on the Uber website. You can also download the Uber app and set up an account. The app itself will let you know if the service is available. Even if the service is not available where you are currently located, it will automatically start working when you travel to an area where Uber does have service.

Method 1 of 2: Check the Uber website

1. Navigate to Uber cities in your web browser.
2. Enter an address, city or zip code in the search bar. A list of possible matches appears below the search bar.
3. Click on the name of the city that matches your search. A message will appear confirming whether Uber is currently available in that city.
   • You can also use a similar method to check the availability of Eats (food delivery) and Uber Rush (courier service), but these services are much more limited.
   • If Uber isn't available in your area, try hailing a cab.

Method 2 of 2: Download the Uber app

1. Download and open Uber in the App Store or Play Store. Tap "Install", and "Open" once the installation is complete.
2. Tap "Register".
3. Fill out the account form and tap "Next". Enter a valid name, email address, password and mobile number. You will receive a verification code via SMS.
4. Enter the verification code sent to you and tap "Next". You will be taken to a payment settings page.
5. Enter your payment information to complete the registration. Enter a valid credit card and expiration date. You will be taken to the driver interface. A blue dot indicates your current location with a movable pin marking your pick-up location.
6. Tap the driver options to check the availability of each Uber service. Each service is represented by a button on the bottom row of the app (uberX, uberXL, Select, Access or Taxi). The pin shows an estimate of the time for the nearest car to reach you, indicating that the service is available. If no service is available, the pin will read "No cars available".
   • uberX is the standard Uber service, uberXL is a larger car, Select is for luxury vehicles, Access is for people who need a disability.
   • You can drag the pin around to change your pick-up location and the estimated time will be adjusted.
   • Nearby cars are shown on the map and their current location is updated every few seconds.

Tips

• If you're using Uber internationally, you'll need to contact your bank to set up a travel notification and your cellular provider to check data availability (although Uber also works using Wi-Fi).
