Properly citing your sources in an essay will help ensure that your text appears consistent and professional. You can do this in a variety of styles, and below are the most common ones for recording text from lecture notes.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Mentions in the body of your essay

  1. Include only your own notes in the body of your essay. Please include the name of the speaker, date and location of the college. State the month in full.
  2. Mention the college in a footnote.
    • Write the name of the speaker, then a comma followed by the title of the lecture in quotation marks.
    • Then place the word "college," between brackets, followed by the name of the institute, the city and possibly the province and the date. All separated by commas.
    • Months cannot be abbreviated (e.g. February 16, 2009).
    • Indent the first line of text from sources listed in footnotes.

Method 2 of 3: Entries in the list of works cited

  1. Include works cited in the reference list, usually the last page of your essay.
  2. Include the speaker's last name, followed by a comma and then the first name.
  3. Add the title of the lecture in quotation marks on the next line. Start the title with a capital letter. If there are quotes in the title of the lecture or presentation, make them single quotes.
  4. Add the name of the conference or event sponsor of the presentation to the next line.
  5. Indicate where the lecture took place. For famous places you do not have to indicate the name of the province or state (eg Amsterdam, Chicago or San Francisco).
  6. Then state the date of the lecture as the last line. Months should be abbreviated for MLA citations (eg Oct 12, 2003).
  7. Align the first line of text to the left of the page for each citation. Each following line of the citation should be indented.

Method 3 of 3: Entries in a bibliography or reference list

  1. State the source of the college.
    • Include the speaker's name as the first line. This is followed by the last name, a comma and then the first name or first names (if applicable).
    • Then place the word "college," between brackets, followed by the name of the institute, the city and possibly the province and the date. You may not abbreviate months in the date (e.g. February 16, 2009).
    • Align the first line of text to the left of the page for each citation. Each following line of the citation should be indented.
  2. Include notes of speeches you found online in your reference list.
    • Include the speaker's name as the first line. This is followed by the surname, a comma and then initials of the first name or first names (if applicable).
    • Indicate the year of the presentation in brackets, after the name of the speaker.
    • Indicate the title of the lecture in italics. Use capital letters only with proper names and the first word of the sentence.
    • Indicate the format of the notes when citing online lecture notes. State this after the title of the lecture, in square brackets, such as [PowerPoint slides] or [PDF document].
    • Include the web address. At the end of the citation, write "Obtained from" and then the URL.
    • Align the first line of text to the left of the page for each citation. Each following line of the citation should be indented.
