This wikiHow shows you how to ignore messages in WhatsApp by "mute" a chat or turn off read receipts.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Mute a chat

  1. Open WhatsApp. This is the green and white icon of a chat bubble with a telephone receiver inside. You can find the app on the home screen or in your app overview.
    • This method will turn off notifications for individual or group chats. New messages will still appear in the chat, but you will no longer be notified after receiving a message.
  2. Tap Chats.
  3. Tap and hold a chat. A row of icons will appear at the top of the screen.
  4. Tap the mute icon. This is the speaker with a line through it and can be found at the top of the screen.
  5. Select a length of time. You will not receive any new sound / vibration alerts for this chat for the duration of time you have chosen. You can choose from 8 o'clock, 1 week or 1 year.
  6. Remove the checkmark from “Show notifications”. This ensures that no notifications will appear on the screen when you receive a new message in this chat.
    • If you still want to receive on-screen notifications (without sound and vibration), you can skip this step.
  7. Tap OKE. Notifications are now muted for the time you selected making it easy to ignore new messages.
    • You can still see new messages in the chat by opening the chat.

Method 2 of 2: Turn off read receipts

  1. Open WhatsApp. This is the green and white icon of a chat bubble with a telephone receiver inside. You can find the app on the home screen or in your app overview.
    • With this method, you can turn off the feature that allows your contacts to see when you have read their messages.
  2. Tap on ⁝. This button is located in the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Account.
  5. Tap on Privacy.
  6. Remove the tick at “Read receipts”. This can be found in the “Messages” section. Once you disable this, your contacts will no longer see blue check marks when you have read their messages. You will not see any blue check marks yourself if your contacts have read your messages.
