An improperly secured motorcycle can cause it to fall out of your truck or trailer while driving. To keep your motorcycle safe from falling during transport, use an effective method of securing it in the bed of a truck or on a trailer. Follow the steps below to secure the motorcycle.

Steps

  1. 1 Install a wheel lock at the front of your truck or trailer. A wheel lock is a wedge-shaped structure made of metal or other sturdy material installed in front of the front wheel of the motorcycle to prevent any movement.
  2. 2 Load your motorcycle onto a truck bed or trailer. Roll the motorcycle up the ramp or, with the help of several people, lift it up to load it on a body or on a trailer.
  3. 3 Place the front wheel in the wheel holder.
  4. 4 Install soft hinges at the base of the handlebars on the left and right sides. Soft loops are straps that will prevent you from scratching your motorcycle with the lanyard hooks.
  5. 5 Hook the hooks of the ratchet lines onto the free ends of the soft loops on the handlebars. Ratchet slings are standard loading slings and will help keep your motorcycle securely in place.
  6. 6 Attach the other end of the ratchet lanyard to a secure location on your truck or trailer.
  7. 7 Tighten the straps. Take up any slack in one lanyard and tighten it carefully. Repeat with the second line. Each line must be tightened just enough to keep the motorcycle upright with them.
  8. 8 Find a stationary part on each side of the back of your motorcycle. All motorcycles are slightly different, so make sure the part you choose is a strong structural part of the motorcycle, such as a frame.
  9. 9 Install soft hinges on every fixed part on the back of your motorcycle.
  10. 10 Connect the ratchet lines. Hook the straps around the soft loops on the motorcycle and on the body of your truck or trailer.
  11. 11 Tighten the straps at the rear of the motorcycle. Take up any slack in the lines and then tighten them tightly.
  12. 12 Recheck all four lines. Make sure each of them is tight enough so that there is no slack when securing the motorcycle.

Tips

  • After you have finished tying the motorcycle with lines, step into the back of your truck or trailer and jump, simulating driving on the road. This will give you an idea of how well the bike is secured to the truck or trailer. Tighten the slings if necessary.

* To ensure a secure fit, use a ratchet lanyard that has a metal buckle and a retainer.

  • Check your lines from time to time. If you have a long trip, sometimes get out of the car to check the motorcycle. Correct the lines if the motorcycle has shifted.
  • While securing the motorcycle, have an assistant hold it upright.

Warnings

  • Do not tighten the ratchet lines so tightly that this will damage the parts of your motorcycle.
