1 Determine the type of lock you are dealing with. Most doorknobs, also known as "bedroom and toilet" handles, have a button or twist mechanism inside to lock. On the outside, the doorknob has a small circular opening in the center for emergency access.
  • If you can, find out what kind of locking mechanism you are dealing with (button or swivel).
  • If there is a keyhole on the outside of the door lock instead of a hole, then you should use the method of opening the locked front door.
  • 2 Find a suitable item to pick the lock. You need to pick up a long, thin object, small enough to fit into the hole, but strong enough to push the locking mechanism. A small screwdriver or hex wrench, hairpin, or sturdy paper clip is ideal. You can even use a bamboo skewer from the kitchen, or use a cotton swab to remove the fluff from one end.
    • If using a hairpin or paperclip, bend it first so that you have a long, straight piece of metal.
    • If you find it difficult to find a suitable item, use your imagination. Open a ballpoint pen and use a refill, or look at the bottom of your wallet for a toothpick. You can almost always find what works!
  • 3 Use this item to pick the lock. If the lock has a push-button mechanism, simply insert the tool into the hole as far as it will go and press. You should immediately hear a click, indicating that the lock is open. If there is a rotating mechanism in the lock, you need to insert the tool and move it in a circle with rotating movements until you bump into something, and then press lightly. After that, you will hear a click, which means that the door is unlocked.
    • When opening the twist lock, you may have to twist the tool both clockwise and counterclockwise until the lock yields.
  • 4 Remove the handle. If you cannot remove the handle to unlock the lock in the manner described above, most of the locking handles are secured together with two visible screws. Find a suitable screwdriver and simply unscrew them. After a few minutes, both handles will fall off. Just pull the remaining locking mechanism out of the hole and open the door.
    • In the process of unscrewing, it is best to alternate the rear and outer screws with each other.
    • You may need to apply slight pressure to the handle by pulling on it when the screws are loosened.
    • In some cases, the screws are hidden under the decorative collar. If so, this cuff must first be removed by inserting a paper clip into the small hole in the cuff that will release it (if present), or by gently prying the cuff using a flat head screwdriver.
  • Method 2 of 3: Using a Credit Card to Open a Locked Front Door

    1. 1 Make sure you have permission to pick the lock. If the castle in question does not apply to your own home, obtain permission from the property owner before proceeding. Burglary and entry into most places is a serious crime and will definitely result in jail time.
    2. 2 Find a suitable card. A plastic card would be ideal, it is both rigid and somewhat flexible. Do not use your valid credit or debit cards, as they can get damaged in the process. A supermarket discount card is ideal, as is a laminated library card. For some locks, even a solid business card will work.
    3. 3 Use the card to pick the lock. Take the card and slide it through the gap between the door and the jamb. Start above the doorknob and work your card down and in. You may need to move it a little, but if you're lucky, the card will press on the latch and let you open the door.
      • This trick only works for regular locks. It will not help if you need to unlock the bolt.
      • With this method, some doors can be opened almost instantly, while others will require more effort. Try to take different cards, insert them at different angles.
      • Keep in mind that this trick only tricks the lock, it doesn't actually open the door. If you let the door close, you may find yourself locked over and over again!

Method 3 of 3: Opening a Locked Front Door with Household Items

    1. 1 Make sure you have permission to pick the lock. If the castle in question is not your property, get permission from the owner before starting. Hacking and entering is a crime!
    2. 2 Craft a lockpick using household items. Bobby pins and bobby pins work best, but you can also use large paper clips or other stiff pieces of wire. First, make a lockpick by straightening the invisibility key or a paper clip. Then bend the tip of the pick with a length of 3-3.5 mm at an angle of 20 degrees.
      • If you are using a hairpin with plastic tips, you will need to first remove the plastic from the end of the pick using a pair of wire cutters, sandpaper or, in extreme cases, even your teeth.
    3. 3 Make a lockpick. Take another invisible paperclip or straightened paperclip, then fold it in half and fold it into an L-shape. The lock pick should be solid enough, so make sure and use a large paper clip or hairpin. You can also use a flat head screwdriver or similar object that will go down the bottom of the keyhole to act as a lock pick.
    4. 4 Pick the lock with your tools. First, insert the pick into the bottom of the lock and rotate it in the direction you would turn the key to unlock the lock and apply tension on the lock. Maintain this tension throughout the entire process. Then slowly move the pick to the top of the lock using smooth up and down movements. You should hear a series of clicks as the various cotter pins have been lifted. When you have successfully lifted all the cotter pins, the pick will suddenly spin freely and unlock the door.
      • Most locks can be picked in seconds, but it takes a little practice. If you are frustrated by a futile effort, take a deep breath and start over.
      • This method also works for many bolts and padlocks.
      • Picking a lock in this way looks extremely suspicious, and most likely will lead to the fact that your neighbors will call the police. If you are a child, call your parents and tell them what you are going to do before you start, and be prepared to provide the police with proof that you are breaking into your own home, garage, and so on.

    Tips

    • If you have such interior lockable door handles at home, it is a good idea to keep an item suitable for unlocking on top of the door jamb or in another easily accessible place so as not to look for it in a critical situation.

    Warnings

    • The bathroom carries with it the threat of flooding and other potential deadly hazards. If a young child locks himself in the bathroom, consider it an emergency. If you are unable to open the door immediately, call the emergency team. The fire department always deals with these kinds of incidents and it is better to be safe than sorry!
