A proposal diagram shows the relationship between its parts. Once you understand the basics, making a diagram will feel like a Sudoku or a crossword puzzle. This is a great way to learn grammar!

Steps

  1. 1 Draw a horizontal line with a short vertical line in the center. Write the predicate to the right of the line and the subject to the left.
  2. 2 If your sentence includes a direct object or subject object, continue the horizontal line behind the predicate. If there is a straight object, then draw a vertical line after the predicate and write the word there. If you need to associate a predicate with a complement, draw a curving line after the predicate and write the complement there.
  3. 3 Draw a curving line from the subject. Fill in any definitions and describe the subject here. Repeat any additions. If there are definitions describing a straight object or predicative, draw a curving line and write the definition there.
  4. 4 Draw a curving line after the predicate. Write down any circumstances that describe the predicate here, repeat any additional circumstances. If the sentence contains circumstances that change the definition, draw a curving line after the definition and write them there.
  5. 5 For any prepositional sentences, first of all decide what role the sentence plays - definitions or circumstances. Once you've figured out which word it describes, draw a curving line below the word and write a sentence on the line. On the horizontal line after, write the object.
  6. 6 If any part is compound, connect the parts with a dotted line and indicate the union. For example, if you have a compound subject, draw two lines for the subject and write them on the line. Connect them with a dotted line.
  7. 7 In more complex sentences, connect the main sentence with the subordinate with a dotted line. Disassemble them as usual.

Tips

  • If this is your first time plotting sentence charts, start with simple sentences (Dogs barked. Black cat meowed).
  • Please note that only basic diagramming information is provided here. Remember, grammar is not an exact science! If everything is structured logically and follows the rules, then for any proposal you can draw a diagram.
