How to determine where North-South and East-West are?

Steps

1. 1 Stand facing the sun. Make sure your shadow is behind you.
   • If the time is before noon, then you are looking to the East.
   • Opposite direction East - West.
2. 2 You need to know the time. If it is noon, you are looking to the West, and your shadow is in the opposite direction, to the East.
3. 3 Stay in the same position.
4. 4 Now you know where the East is. Extend your left arm to the side, there is North (if it's before noon).
5. 5 Now you know that if you face the sun in the morning, you will look to the East, your back will be turned to the West, to the left will be North, and to the right will be South.
6. 6 If it is afternoon, you will look West, your left to South, right to North, and your back to East.

Tips

• How to determine where North-South and East-West are? In different parts of the earth, the sun rises and sets at different points throughout the year. You may be 30 degrees wrong when trying to find East and West, facing the sun.

Warnings

• You cannot use this method in cloudy weather.
• If it is around noon, you may find it difficult to face the sun with your shadow behind you.
