Dressing up in traditional clothing is a great way to get ready for Oktoberfest. While not a prerequisite for attending the festival, it will add a festive mood to the occasion.

Method 1 of 2: For women

Despite the latest popular trends, traditional women's Oktoberfest costume is relatively conservative. The key feature is the dirndl, a traditional dress with an apron over it. Traditional "dirndli" are ankle-length, but other sizes are available.

1. 1 Put on a country blouse called a trachtablus. Don't choose anything with buttons, and try to avoid blouses with decorative patterns. Traditional blouses have a relatively shallow neckline, but there are also deep ones in case you feel bolder.
2. 2 Wear the dirndl over your blouse. A pleated wide skirt is a special type of dress that consists of a skirt and a sleeveless low top, just like in a jumpsuit. It is designed to be worn over a blouse. Many of them are sewn on top in the form of a bodice, and some are not. Traditional "dirndl" dresses are embroidered and often hand-printed, so they can be expensive.
3. 3 If you can't afford a traditional full skirt in gathering, create a similar look with a separate skirt and bodice.
   • Choose between A-line cotton and round skirts. Choose an item in black, red, dark green, brown or blue. The skirt should be from knee to floor, the most traditional option is floor length.
   • Wear a tight bodice over your blouse. Authentic bodices are made of velvet or felt. If you can find a bodice with thick straps across the shoulders, it will more closely resemble the traditional dirndl style.
4. 4 Tie an apron or apron over your skirt. The apron must match the length of the skirt.
5. 5 If you choose to wear nylon stockings, choose a nude color that matches your skin tone.
6. 6 Add a pair of white socks, stockings, or socks over or in place of them.
7. 7 Choose a comfortable pair of shoes, clogs or Mary Jane shoes in black or dark brown. Pumps and shoes with low heels are preferred over high heels.

Method 2 of 2: For men

"Lederhosen" is the most recognizable feature of the person in the Oktoberfest costume.

1. 1 Wear a plain white or light plaid shirt. The shirt can be long or short sleeved, but it should be buttoned down to the bottom anyway.
2. 2 Throw in a pair of ledenhozen pants. Ledenhosen are typical traditional leather breeches, an original item can be quite expensive. If you can't find the real thing, create a similar look by choosing a pair of brown, black, or dark green, almost knee-length pants.Docker style works best, and your pants shouldn't have too many pockets.
3. 3 Put on some kind of suspenders. Authentic Ledenhozen can be worn with suspenders, but if you buy them separately, try to find something to match the color of your breeches.
4. 4 Add a pair of white, gray, tan, hunting green or bunting socks. Socks should be slightly lowered, made of cotton, knee-length.
   • While many men wear socks stretched to the knee, some prefer to roll them down to the knees, about 5 cm above the ankles.
   • Typically, men in Ledenhozen just above the knees wear socks tucked up, while men in Ledenhozen below the knees wear socks tucked down.
5. 5 Wear traditional shoes like Haferlschuh or Haferl. If you can't find authentic shoes, opt for a pair of black or dark brown leather moccasins.
6. 6 Hat "Don an Alpine". This is a specific style of fedora. It has a pointed tip and wide brim. A bandage is usually tied around the base of the hat and a threaded feather is inserted. However, this is only an optional accessory.

Tips

• A knot on a woman's apron indicates the marital status of the owner. If it is tied on the right, then she is busy. If the knot is on the left, then it is still free.
• Women also add a cotton petticoat to add volume and bounce to the outfit.
