Need to text someone, or even yourself, but don't have your phone nearby? With email programs or countless other instant messaging programs, this is entirely possible.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Use email

1. 

   Open your email program or service.

   Compose a new message.

3. 

   The incoming address will begin with the recipient's phone number (including area code) written in succession. For example with the phone number (555) 555-1234, that would be.

   Enter the domain name of the service to which you are sending the message. You need to know the recipient's carrier. Add the domain name at the end of the address. For example, if the phone number in step above is the number for the AT&T network in the US, the recipient's email address will be.
   
   • If sending images, use the MMS address if available.
   • If your carrier is not listed above, check their support page.

5. 

   Send Message. You can send mail as usual. The recipient will receive the message after a few seconds. advertisement

Method 2 of 3: Use a website

   Find websites to send free messages. There are a variety of services that allow you to send messages from your web browser to your phone. Popular sites include:
   • SendSMSNow
   • AFreeSMS
   • TXT2Day

2. 

   Be careful with spam / mail. Using these sites may cause the device receiving the message to receive a lot of spam / messages. Check the website's privacy statement to be sure that your information will not be stolen.

3. 

   Choose your country. Use the drop-down menu to select the recipient's country.

4. 

   Enter your phone number. Enter the phone number and area code sequentially.

5. 

   Enter your message. Depending on the service you have chosen, you usually have between 130-160 characters to use.

Method 3 of 3: Use a messaging program

1. 

   Download the right application for your phone. iMessage is already pre-installed for iPhone users. For Android users, Hangouts (formerly Talk) is built-in. These programs allow for sending messages to customers on multiple platforms.
   • There are many other programs with similar functionality, such as Skype.

2. 

   Run the corresponding program on your computer. To use Hangout on a PC, go to the Hangout website and download the add-on. To use iMessage from a computer, you must be on a Mac with OS X 10.8 or later. The Messages icon is on the Dock toolbar.
   • You need to sign in with the corresponding account (Google Account, Apple ID or Microsoft).

3. 

   Send your message. Select recipients from the contacts list or search by name. You can also enter a name to message yourself. advertisement
