Although there are a lot of ringtone options on the iPhone, none of them can match your personality. You can use iTunes to turn a song into a 30-40 second ringtone. After syncing the new music with your iPhone, you can set it to your normal ringtone.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Create Ringtones

  1. Download and install iTunes if you are using Windows. You can use iTunes to create ringtones from your favorite music files on your computer and then transfer them to your iPhone. If you are using a Windows computer, you need to download and install iTunes. On the Mac, iTunes comes pre-installed.
    • You can download iTunes for free from the address.
    • It's recommended to use the latest version of iTunes because syncing will be easier.
    • Although there are many apps and websites that create ringtones, you still need to use iTunes to sync files with your iPhone after cutting music. Isn't it faster to create ringtones directly on iTunes?

  2. Download the song you want to create ringtones for into iTunes. You need to add songs to your iTunes library before creating a ringtone.
    • You can drag and drop songs into the iTunes window to add them to the library.
    • Or you can click File → Add File to Library (on your computer) or iTunes → Add to Library and access the file.
    • If you can't add songs to your library, it might be because the format isn't compatible. Please refer to instructions on converting WAV to MP3 format file online to change the song format.

  3. Listen to the song to find the appropriate piece of music as a ringtone. The ringtone can be approximately 40 seconds long. Find the song's highlight as a ringtone.
  4. Memorize opening and ending times of your music. Record opening and ending times to make cutting music easier.

  5. Right click on the song and select "Get Info" (Watch information). This opens the file details window.
  6. Click the "Options" page. You will find the Start Time and Stop Time fields below.
  7. Enter the time you recorded in the previous step in the Start and Stop fields. Don't forget to check the box next to each field to activate the new time.
  8. Hear and adjust the music. Close the Get Info window and click Play to listen to the music. You can return to the Options page in the Get Info window to adjust the time. Continue to listen to test and adjust until satisfied with the ringtone.
    • Remember that the maximum length of the track is 40 seconds.
  9. Right click on the song and select "Create AAC Version" (Create AAC Version). You should see a fresh copy of the song appear in the library. The original is the full version and the new version is the cut ringtone.
    • If you don't see the "Create AAC Version" option click the "Edit" or "iTunes" menu and choose "Preferences". Click the "Import Settings" button and select "AAC Encoder" in the "Import Using" menu.
  10. Right-click on the new copy and choose either "Show in Windows Explorer" (Display in Windows Windows) (on PC) or "Show in Finder" (Display in Finder) (on Mac). You will see a new window appear and the new copy is highlighted.
  11. Activate file extensions when using Windows. You will change the file format by renaming the extension, but this is hidden from many users. If the extension is enabled you will see chase ".m4a" in the filename. If not, follow these steps:
    • Windows 10, 8.1 and 8 - Click the "View" menu in a Windows Explorer window. Check the box "File name extensions" to enable the extensions.
    • Windows 7 and earlier - Open the Control Panel in the Start menu. Select "Folder Options" or "Appearance and Personalization" and then select "Folder Options". Click on the "View" page. Uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" dialog box.
  12. Right click on the ringtone and select "Rename" (Change name). At this step you can change the file extension.
    • Remember to right-click on the file in an Explorer window, not in your iTunes library.
  13. Change the extension ".m4a" becomes ".m4r". This is the action to convert files to formats that iTunes and iPhone recognize as ringtones.
    • You will receive a warning that this action may render the file inoperable. Please continue to proceed.
  14. Open iTunes library. Return to the iTunes window showing the original song and the copy.
  15. Delete a copy from iTunes, not on your computer. Right-click on the iTunes copy and select "Delete". Select "Keep File" when prompted. If you choose to delete the file, you have to start over. You just want to remove files from iTunes library.
  16. Drag and drop .4r file to the iTunes window. This will add the file to your Tones library. You can transfer this ringtone to iPhone. advertisement
