Running Disk Defragmenter in Windows 7 allows your computer to organize all of its data, improving the average speed and efficiency of your computer. In Windows 7, you can manually defragment your computer at any time, or set a recurring time when Disk Defragmenter is activated. Follow the instructions below to defragment a Windows 7 computer.

Part 1 of 3: Accessing Disk Defragmenter in Windows 7

1. Click the Windows 7 Start button. Then type "Disk Defragmenter" in the search box.
   • Alternatively, you can also click Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
2. Click on "Disk Defragmenter" to open the program. Click on "Disk Defragmenter" to start the procedure.

Part 2 of 3: Manually running Disk Defragmenter

1. Click on the name of the drive you want to defragment. For example, if you want to defrag your computer's hard drive, select "OS (C)."
2. Click on "Defragment Disk" or "Defragment" to start defragmentation. Your computer may take from several minutes to several hours to defrag, depending on the size and the extent to which the disk is fragmented.

Part 3 of 3: Configuring a defragmentation schedule

1. Click on "Enable Schedule" or "Set Schedule...’
2. Place a check next to "Scheduled Run."’
3. Select the frequency in which disk defragmenter should run. You can choose to defrag your computer on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
4. Select the day of the week and time to run Disk Defragmenter.
5. Click on "Select disks" to select the disks you want to defragment. You can choose to defragment all drives, or select drives.
6. Click "OK" and then "Close" to save the Disk Defragmenter preferences. After that, the computer will be defragmented regularly on the day and time as chosen in the schedule.

Tips

• Before manual defragmentation, check the schedule in the main Disk Defragmenter window to see if a disk defragmenter has recently occurred. The schedule will show the time and date of the most recent defragmentation.
• Click on "Analyze Disk" in the main Disk Defragmenter window before starting manual defragmentation. The Analyze Disk procedure will tell you if your computer needs to be defragmented.
• If you are using a computer at work or on a public network, you may need an administrator password to run Disk Defragmenter in Windows 7.
• Schedule an automatic defragmentation procedure to run while the computer is on but not in use, such as during your lunch hour or towards the end of your workday. This will prevent Disk Defragmenter from slowing down your computer or putting additional strain on your CPU while using it.
