Snapchat, one of the world's most popular social apps, is only fun when you can use it with your friends! Adding friends to Snapchat's contact list is easy. If you know his / her username, it shouldn't take more than a few seconds. You can also add friends by automatically searching your phone's contact list.

To step

Before you start

  1. Add a friend to the contact list on your phone. There are two ways to add friends on Snapchat - you can add them directly from your contacts, or search for their username. Both methods are simple. In the first method, the friends you want to add should be in your phone's contact list.
    • In addition, the friend you want to add must have Snapchat installed and signed up for an account. You cannot add people who don't have Snapchat.
    • If your friends are already in your contact list and you are ready to add them, click here.
  2. You can also ask to ask for his / her username. If the friends you want to add aren't in your contact list, you can still find them on Snapchat - provided you know their username. Ask your friends for this information. To find them you will need to enter their username correctly.
    • If you already know your friend's username and are ready to add them, click here.
  3. Install Snapchat and create an account. This goes without saying, but before you start, make sure you have Snapchat installed on your phone or mobile device. In addition, you must ensure that you have signed up for an account. If you don't meet both conditions, you won't be able to add friends and they won't be able to add you.
    • If you don't have the app yet, download it from the App Store or Google Play Store.
    • If you already have the app but don't have an account yet, learn how to create one here.

Method 1 of 2: Add friends from the contact list on your phone

  1. Swipe to the "Add Friends" menu. When you open Snapchat, the camera screen will be the first screen you will see. From there you swipe twice to the right. You will skip the "My Friends" screen, which shows the Snapchat friends you already have, and land on the "Add Friends" menu.
    • You can also tap the little button that looks like a little man with a plus sign - this button is located in the top right corner of the "My Friends" screen.
  2. Tap the notes tab in the top right corner. At the top of your screen you will see two icons: one that looks like the silhouette of a man with a plus next to it, and the other that looks like a notepad. Tap that second.
  3. Click "Continue" when the countdown is complete. Snapchat won't let you browse your phone contacts right away. First you will have to read a short disclaimer. To do this, tap the big "Continue" button at the bottom of the screen - this screen will pop up after a few seconds.
    • Snapchat recommends that you review the privacy policy before allowing the app to access your contacts. You can find the privacy policy here.
  4. Click on "Okay" to continue.
  5. Click the plus sign next to each user you want to add. Snapchat should now show you a list of all Snapchat users in your phone's contact list. Tap the gray plus next to each name to add that user
    • A purple check mark means that you have already added that person as a friend.

Method 2 of 2: Add friends with their username

  1. Go to the "Add Friends" screen. This is the same screen you navigated to in the above method. To get there, swipe right twice from the camera screen.
  2. Tap the magnifying glass. This will unfold a text window. Type in your friend's Snapchat username (make sure to spell it correctly) and tap "Okay" or the magnifying glass to begin your search.
    • Just to be clear, you serves your friend's username to be able to find him / her in this way. Their real name or phone number is not enough. Contact your friends if you are unsure of their username.
  3. Tap the plus sign to add your friend. Once Snapchat has found your friend, his / her name will appear below the search bar. Tap the plus sign next to their name to add this person as a Snapchat friend.
    • Know that you need to add someone as a friend before you can receive snaps from them. If this is not yet the case, it will read "pending".
  4. Add friends who have already added you from the "Add Friends" menu. If you don't enter text in the "Find Friends" search screen, you will be presented with a list of Snapchat users who have already added you. Anyone who has added you (but who you haven't added yet) will have a gray plus next to their name. Tap this plus to add those users if you want.
    • Please note: Also on Snapchat there are quite a few "bots" active - these are computer controlled users who try to send you advertising. To avoid this inconvenience, don't add anyone you don't know.

Tips

  • Note that Snapchat users must add you as a friend before you can view their snaps.
  • You can reach Support from the Settings menu - swipe left once from the camera screen and tap the gear in the top right corner.
  • Do you find it difficult to find your way? Then take a look at the Snapchat site. This fixes many issues related to adding friends (and many other issues).

Warnings

  • If, for whatever reason, you no longer want to be someone's Snapchat friend, find their name and tap the purple check mark next to it. This way, you won't receive any more snaps from them - until you decide to revive the Snapchat friendship.
