In general, most people hate cleaning their windows as they deal with dirt, dripping water, wads of kitchen or newspaper paper and nasty streaks on the glass. There are many techniques and methods you can use to wash your windows, and you may not know which method works best. When in doubt, it's always a good idea to check how window cleaners work. After all, their job is to wash windows, and the quick and efficient method they use requires a bucket of detergent, a sponge and a squeegee.

Part 1 of 2: Removing the worst dirt from your windows

  1. Remove stubborn stains. Especially on the outside, there can be stubborn stains on your windows because they are exposed to hard water that flows down, lime, bird droppings and other influences that can leave dirt and scale on the glass. There are a few methods you can use to remove stains from the inside and outside of your windows:
    • Use a limescale cleaner. Dampen a sponge with an amount of cleaner and rub it over the stains on the windows. Rinse the areas with water and then clean your windows as usual.
    • Spray the affected areas with pure vinegar and let the vinegar sit for at least five minutes. Use a sponge or cloth to rub the stains and then clean your windows as usual.
    • Make a paste of water and a cleaner containing oxalic acid. Spread the paste on the affected areas with a clean cloth and rub well over it. Rinse off the paste and then clean your windows as usual.
    • You may be able to remove crusts and sandy patches by scraping them off with a razor.
  2. Gather your supplies. To clean your windows you need the following:
    • Sponge or brush (or a squeegee)
    • Rubber squeegee to dry the glass
    • Absorbent microfiber cloth, lint-free cloth or chamois
    • Clean cloth or rag
    • Bucket with detergent
    • Large towel to protect the floor
  3. Wipe off the excess water. If there are any areas where water has spilled or dripped down, wipe them dry with an absorbent lint-free cloth. This way there will be no stripes on the window.
    • To prevent damage to the frames, use a separate cloth or cloth to wipe water off the windowsill.

Tips

  • Unfortunately, you cannot clean double glass on the inside without breaking the airtight connection between the two glass plates. However, if there is dirt or cobwebs between the glass panes, this indicates that the window is leaking and you should have it replaced.
