Music on your iPhone can be very useful when you have to wait in line at the supermarket checkout for a long time or get stuck on the train due to a delay. You can quickly and easily sync music from your iTunes library to your iPhone's music folder. Follow the steps below to learn how to sync your iPhone and start listening to your favorite music on the go.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Preparing your electronics

  1. Check if your computer has a USB 2.0 port and the latest version of iTunes. If you don't have the latest version of iTunes, download it by updating and following the installation instructions.
    • You can also download the latest version of iTunes from the Apple website. Click "Download Now" in the "iTunes" tab.
  2. Make sure your Mac is running on Mac OS X version 10.6 or later. If you have a PC, make sure you have Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later.
    • Read on wikiHow how to update a Mac or PC before continuing.

Method 2 of 4: Connecting your iPhone

  1. Open iTunes on your computer. Do this before connecting the iPhone to avoid recognition problems.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the computer. Make sure you don't accidentally use a USB port that is not part of the computer, such as a keyboard USB port or an external USB hub.
    • Make sure no other USB devices are connected to the other ports.
  3. Connect your iPod to the Dock Connector of the USB cable. To do this, use the Apple adapter Dock Connector to USB port that came with your iPhone.
    • If your computer has USB ports on both the front and rear, use the ones on the back of the computer.
    • If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, quit and restart iTunes to see if that helps.
    • If your iPhone is still not recognized, reboot your computer from scratch and start over.

Method 3 of 4: Syncing your entire music library

  1. Select your iPhone. Depending on your version of iTunes, your iPod will likely be in the left menu under "Devices" or in the top right corner of the iTunes window.
  2. Select the "Music" tab in the management window of the iPhone. The tab "Music" can be found directly to the left of the tab "Summary".
    • If iTunes 11 is running on the latest version, first go to the "Summary" page of your iPhone management window and click the "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" box in the "Options" box.
    • Understand that syncing an entire music library will erase all of the contents of the "Music" app on your iPhone, replacing it with the contents of the iTunes library you are about to sync.
  3. Locate the "Sync Music" box and click it so that a blue check mark appears. This box can also be found in the "Music" tab of your iPhone management screen. Look at the options under "Sync Music" and choose the function that is suitable for what you want to achieve.
    • To sync your entire music library, select "Entire Music Library."
    • To sync all individual playlists, choose the "Selected playlists" option, and choose the playlist you want to sync.
  4. Click "Apply" under the sync options in the lower right corner. iTunes will sync your iPhone automatically. From now on, whenever your iPhone is connected to your computer, iTunes will automatically sync all new music to your iPhone. If this does not happen automatically, navigate to the "Summary" page of your iPhone, and click on "Synchronization" at the bottom right of the screen.
  5. Wait for the iPod to finish syncing and then disconnect the device. Make sure you have disconnected iPhone in iTunes by clicking the eject arrow to the right of your iPhone name before disconnecting the Dock Connector.

Method 4 of 4: Syncing a playlist

  1. Create a new playlist in iTunes. The advantage of the playlist is that you can manually manage the songs on your iPhone and keep an eye on the storage capacity at the bottom of the window, so you don't go past the allowed amount of content on your iPhone. You do this by selecting "New Playlist" from the File tab at the top of the screen, or by clicking the plus sign at the bottom left of the iTunes window.
  2. Give the playlist an appropriate name, such as “iPhone Music. That way, you don't forget that this playlist is specifically for transferring music to your iPhone.
  3. Drag and drop music from your music library to your new playlist. You can always easily delete songs from a playlist without removing them from your iTunes library.
  4. Select the "Music" tab in your iPhone management window in iTunes. Make sure "Sync music" is checked, then look at the options below.
    • If you have the latest version of iTunes (version 11), first go to the "Summary" page of your iPhone management screen and click the "Manually manage music and videos" box in the "Options" box.
  5. Choose the "Selected Playlists" option in the "Music" tab. Check all playlist (s) you want to sync.
  6. Click "Apply," in the lower left corner of the "Music" tab. Your iPhone should now start syncing automatically.
  7. If it doesn't start syncing, return to the "Summary" tab of the iPhone management screen. Click on "Synchronization" in the lower left corner of the window. Your iPhone will then update and the playlist will be copied to your phone.
  8. Wait for your iPhone to finish syncing before pressing eject / eject.
