Once you've found the model number of your Dyson device, you can determine which filters to wash and how often. Make sure to turn the unit off and unplug it before removing the filter. Only wash the filter with cold water. Some models have a filter that must be soaked briefly in cold water before rinsing. Let the filter air dry. Keeping your washable filters clean improves performance and extends the life of your appliance.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Finding the model number

  1. Find the serial number of your vacuum cleaner. Look for a sticker on the device. Write down the first three numbers of the serial number on the sticker. The sticker can be placed on the back, behind the hose; sit on the base, between the wheels and behind the collector.
    • If you're struggling to find the sticker, check out http://www.dyson.com/support/findserialnumber.aspx.
  2. Select the model on the Dyson help page. Go to http://www.dyson.com/support.aspx. Enter the serial number, if you have one. If not, select the style of your machine. Choose the image and description that match your device. Then select the topic "Washing the filter".
    • If there is no option for washing the filter, check the user manual.
  3. Check the manufacturer's recommendations. Figure out how to remove the filter, if necessary. Determine which filters to wash. Check how often they should be washed. Determine whether the filter of your device should be soaked.
    • Some models, such as the DC07, have a washable filter as well as a motor filter, which never needs to be washed.
    • Some models, such as the DC24 Multi Floor, have more than one washable filter.
    • The filters on most models should be washed every three to six months. However, Dyson 360 robotic vacuum cleaner pre-filters should be washed at least once a month.

Part 2 of 3: Remove and wash the filter

  1. Disconnect from the power supply. Disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the power supply, if applicable. Switch the vacuum cleaner OFF. Never try to open the vacuum cleaner when it is switched on or when it is plugged in.
  2. Remove the filter. Open the vacuum cleaner carefully. Push the filter housing release button, if your model has one. Remove the filter from the plastic housing, if applicable.
  3. Let the filter soak, if applicable. Fill a bowl with cold water. Do not add detergent to the bowl. Immerse the filter in water and let it soak for at least five minutes.
    • Some wireless models - such as the DC35 and DC44 - require a soak to wash the filter.
    • Some upright vacuum cleaners, such as the DC17, require a soak to wash the filter. With others, such as the DC24 Multi Floor, this is not the case.
  4. Rinse the filter under cold water. Gently squeeze the filter while rinsing it. Continue to rinse and squeeze for at least five minutes until the water coming out of the filter is clear.
    • Some filters have to be rinsed ten times before the water is clear.

Part 3 of 3: Let the filter dry

  1. Shake out excess water. Shake the filter out over the sink. Tap the filter against your hand or the sink to get any remaining drops of water out.
  2. Place the filter in a warm, dry place. Place the filter horizontally unless the directions indicate otherwise. Never put the filter in the microwave or in the dryer and never place it near an open fire.
    • For example, place the filter outside in the sun or near (but not on) a radiator.
  3. Let the filter dry completely. Let the filter air dry for as long as necessary. Make sure it is completely dry before putting it back into your device.
    • The filters on some upright and wireless models - such as the DC07, DC15, DC17, and DC24 - require 12 hours to air dry.
    • The filters on some models - such as the DC17 (standing) and 360 (robot) - need to be air dried for 24 hours.
