The national flag of the United States is folded - in between two flag ceremonies - according to a formal and time-honored ritual, resulting in a neatly folded triangle. In this way, the flag resembles the three-pointed hat that was popular during the American Revolutionary War.

Make sure the flag is properly folded. When the flag is fully folded, all that should be visible is a blue area with stars. Tuck the end into the fold to secure the flag.

- When the flag is hoisted, lowered, or carried in a procession, soldiers must always salute.
