Bocce, also called bocci or boccie, is a simple yet strategic game with an ancient pedigree. Originally from ancient Egypt, the game of bocce began to show its best under the Romans and Emperor Augustus. It gained massive popularity with the influx of Italian immigrants at the turn of the 20th century. Bocce is now a calming, competitive way to spend a few hours outdoors with a pleasant company of friends.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Get Started

1. 1 Collect your set of bocce balls. The standard bocce set contains 8 colored balls - 4 points each, the colors are usually green and red - and one small ball, called the Pallino.
   • Different levels of play are often associated with different sizes of bocce balls. Smaller balls are usually for beginners and children, while the larger ones are used by professionals. Bocce balls are available in standard 107 mm (4.2 in) diameter and 920 g (~ 2 kg) standard weight.
   • Standard bocce kits will set you back at least $ 20, but if you are going to buy a professional kit, you may need more than $ 100.
2. 2 Choose your teams. Bocce can be played by two separate players facing each other, or by two teams with two, three or four players each. Teams of 5 or more are not recommended as there are fewer balls than players, which means that not everyone will get their ball.
3. 3 Customize your play area known as the court ’’’ If you don't have a bocce court, you can always play in an open area, although a court is definitely preferred. Part 2 of 3: The Game

1. 1 Use a coin or randomly to decide which team will throw the small ball first. It doesn't really matter who goes first, as the teams will alternate, throwing the small ball at the start of each new game.
2. 2 Drop the small ball in the designated area. The team that wins the toss or is randomly selected to launch will have two opportunities to throw a small ball in the 5 m (~ 16 ft) area that ends 2.5 m (~ 8 ft) from the court boundary. If the first team throws the small ball and throws it in the desired area, the second team gets a chance to throw the small ball.
   • An alternative set of rules says that the small ball should only be thrown past the peg adjuster that marks the middle of the court.
   • If you are not playing bocce on the court, feel free to throw the ball, provided it is far enough away from the players so that the gameplay does not get too easy.
3. 3 After you have successfully thrown the small ball, throw the first bocce. The team that threw the small ball is responsible for throwing the first bocce. The goal is to throw the bocce ball as close to the small ball as possible, the one that is thrown by the bocce ball must be behind the fault line, which is about 10 feet above the bottom of the main area.
   • There are several ways to throw bocce. Most tend to throw the bocce in a sneaky way, with the palm through the bottom closer to the ground, or lobby the ball higher into the air. Some choose to throw the ball from the top rather than the bottom and lobby for it.
4. 4 Have the second team hit the bocce balls. The team that hasn't knocked out yet gets a chance now. One player from the team must throw the ball as close to the small ball as possible.
5. 5 Decide which team gets the chance to continue throwing their remaining bocce balls. The team that throws the bocce ball farther from the small ball currently gets the chance to throw the remaining three bocce balls in a row, each time trying to hit as close to the small ball as possible.
   • You need to hit the small ball when hitting the bocce. The only practical ball hitting effect that adjusts the ball is from where you aim.
   • If the bocce hits a small ball, it is usually called a "kiss" or "baci". This throw is usually worth two points if the bocce ball stops touching the small ball at the end of the throw.
6. 6 Allow the team that has not completed their throws to serve balls. At the end of the game, all 8 bocce balls must be clustered at different distances around the small ball.

Part 3 of 3: Counting and Continuing

1. 1 It is measured which bocce team is closer to the small ball. After all, the team that threw the bocce closer to the small ball scores more points. The team will collect one or more points, depending on the position of their other balls.
2. 2 One point for each ball from the winning team that is closer than the nearest ball of the other team. Depending on the rules you can use, bocce balls that touch the small ball, at the end of the count, play at two points instead of one.
   • If two teams threw balls at an equal distance from the small ball, points are not awarded, but the game process is repeated.
3. 3 If it’s a draw, play another game. Count the points at the end of each game. Start of the next game at the opposite end of the court.
4. 4 Continue playing until the team gets 12 points. Or, play until the team reaches 15 or 21.

Tips

• To enjoy the game longer, you do not need to keep score.

Warnings

• Don't throw bocce balls. They are very heavy and you could hurt someone's head.
