Brewing the perfect cup of black coffee is an art. Drinking your coffee without sugar, milk or cream can take some getting used to, but you can concentrate on the full flavor of freshly roasted coffee beans. Black coffee is usually prepared in a coffee machine, but modern coffee connoisseurs sometimes prefer to brew their coffee manually to get the best possible flavor from the beans.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Make black coffee manually

  1. Buy freshly roasted whole coffee beans. If you can't buy the coffee beans from a roaster within a week of roasting, get a bag of vacuum-packed coffee beans from a reputable coffee roaster.
  2. Buy your own coffee grinder or have the coffee beans ground in the shop. If possible, opt for a coffee grinder with burrs instead of a normal coffee grinder with knives. For the best results, grind the fresh beans every day immediately before you start brewing coffee.
    • Experiment with different grinds. Finely ground beans are generally preferred, but this can make your coffee taste more bitter than with a coarse grind.
    • Many people recommend opting for a grind with granules the size of large sugar crystals.
  3. Use good water. If you like the water that comes out of your tap, chances are that you can make good coffee with it. Never use softened or distilled water. By filtering your tap water with a carbon filter, you can ensure that it has a less strong chemical taste.
    • The minerals in the water are important when making coffee.
  4. Buy small amounts of freshly roasted whole coffee beans. Beans exposed to air and sunlight will spoil.
  5. Grind the coffee beans daily in a coffee grinder with grinding discs or knives. Do this just before you start brewing coffee. With a coffee grinder with burrs, the beans will be ground the most evenly, but such a grinder is a lot more expensive than a small coffee grinder with knives. If you are using a coffee grinder with blades, shake it several times while grinding so that the beans are ground more evenly.
    • Try different grinds. The finer the grind, the stronger the taste. However, it can make your coffee more bitter.
  6. Ready.

Tips

  • Buy as many coffee beans as you need in five to seven days. Store them at room temperature in an airtight container in a place out of direct sunlight. Do not store the coffee beans in the refrigerator or freezer.
