A cyclic redundancy check is a technique used to check for errors, especially targeting hard drives or optical drives. Related data error can arise if data on hard drive or DVD is corrupt. You will then receive the error message: Data error (cyclic redundancy check). In this article you can read what you can do about it.

To step

1. Check the cause. If the CRC data error is reported by the hard disk, the cause is probably data that has been incorrectly written to the hard disk. This can be caused by a corrupt operating system or a power outage.
2. To resolve a CRC data error related to the hard drive, you can use the CHKDSK application. Right click on the hard drive giving the error. Then click on "Properties".
3. However, you often do not get to see all the properties in the previous way. The alternative is to open a command prompt window and run the following commands:
   • Run CMD as Administrator
   • Type chkdsk G: / f / r (replace "G" with the letter of the drive causing the error).
   • Start the DiskPart utility. In the same window type: diskpart
   • When DiskPart has started, type: rescan. This command checks if new drives are connected to the computer.
   • You should now be able to analyze the disk.
4. View the logs from the CHKSDK utility as follows:
   • Double-click My Computer and then right-click the hard drive you want to check. Click Properties and then click Tools. Under Error checking, click Check now.
   • You will now see a message that you need to restart the computer in order to perform the check. Click Yes to schedule the disk check and restart the computer.
   • Go to the options and click on the "Check Now" button. Check: "Automatically check for file system errors" or "Find and repair bad sectors". Then click on start.
5. Burn a new CD or DVD. If the optical drive gives the error, there is no way to fix it. If you burned the CD or DVD yourself, you can try burning the data again to another disc, but now at a slower speed (4x is the recommended speed). The higher the burning speed, the greater the chance of errors.

Tips

• Sometimes a CD or DVD will already give a CRC data error if the disc is a bit dirty. Then clean the disc and possibly buy a means that you can repair small scratches.

Warnings

• A hard drive CRC data error can be an indication of a drive getting worse. Back up all important documents just in case.
