Do you want to visit more than 400 museums in the Netherlands for free or with a discount? Then request a Museum card! Not only do you save a lot of money, you also support the museums with it - if you buy a Museumkaart for the whole family, you and your children can discover the wealth of culture, science and art of the Netherlands and the rest of the world, and you may also find some inspiration for your own creative projects, study choices or your career. But above all, it is just great fun to fill in a day out. Order the card online, or go to one of the affiliated museums to request a temporary card.

  1. Take a photo or scan your passport photo. Make a scan of your passport photo with a scanner or take an image with your phone and save the passport photo on your computer. The photo must be easily recognizable and only show the applicant's face. The passport photo may be black / white or in color.
  2. Go to the Museumkaart website. Go to Museumkaart.nl to enter your details and request a card.
  3. Click on "Order". This option can be found at the top of the screen. By ordering online, your card is immediately registered.
  4. Enter your age. You can choose an adult card (19 years and older), youth card (13 to 18 years) and a kids card (up to 12 years). You can click on the image or on the "Add" button with the shopping cart.

  6. Select your passport photo. The screen for uploading a passport photo opens. Click on "Choose a file" to proceed to the screen where you can upload a passport photo of yourself. An explorer window opens. Take it to the place on your computer where you saved the image file of your previously taken or scanned passport photo, select the file and press "Open". Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your photo is the way you want and to confirm your choice.
  7. Rotate and crop the photo. Click on "Continue" to continue. After cropping and rotating the photo, click "Continue" to go to the next screen. You will be asked if you are satisfied with the photo. Click "Next" to confirm and continue. A new screen will open to complete the card order.
  8. Select a payment method. Check your order and select a payment method. Click on "Next" to complete the payment.
  9. Wait until you get the card. You will receive the Museum card at home within a few working days. Check that all information is correct.
  10. Use the card whenever you want. The Museum Card is valid for a year in more than 400 museums, so there is plenty to see and experience. Keep in mind that in many cases you have to pay a surcharge for special exhibitions, usually a few euros.

Method 2 of 2: Buy from a museum

  1. Go to a museum affiliated with the Museum Association. If you want to go straight to a museum, but with a discount, you can. Choose one of the more than 400 museums that are affiliated with the Museum Association and can issue a temporary Museum Card.
    • With this temporary card you can visit a museum a maximum of five times. Buying the card counts as a first visit, whether or not you enter the museum.
  2. Register the card. The Museum card that you buy in a museum is a temporary card that is only valid for 31 days. You must register this card on the Museumkaart website as soon as possible.
    • By registering, you ensure that the card cannot be used by someone else. You will receive the final card with your details on it.
    • After receiving the final card, the temporary card is no longer valid.
  3. Enter the 9-digit number of your temporary card. Once you have opened the Museumkaart website, go to the "register" section and enter the 9-digit number you have been given.
  4. Take a photo or scan your passport photo. Make a scan of your passport photo with a scanner or take an image with your phone and save the passport photo on your computer. The photo must be easily recognizable and only show the applicant's face. The passport photo may be black / white or in color.
  5. Select your passport photo. Click on "Choose a file" to proceed to the screen where you can upload a passport photo of yourself. An explorer window opens. Take it to the place on your computer where you saved the image file of your previously created or scanned passport photo, select the file and press "Open", after which the file will be sent. Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your photo is the way you want and to confirm your choice.
  6. Click on "Continue" to continue. After cropping and rotating the photo, click "Continue" to go to the next screen. You will be asked if you are satisfied with the photo. Click "Next" to confirm and continue. A new screen will open to complete the registration and order of the final card.
  7. Use the temporary card until you have received the final card. The temporary Museum card can still be used until you have received the definitive card for which you registered. Once you have received the final card, destroy the temporary card and use your new Museum card from that moment on.
