To step

Method 1 of 2: Beat Sudowoodo

1. Go to Goldenrod City.
2. Beat the gym leader, Whitney. She has a level 18 Clefairy and a level 20 Miltank.
3. Enter the house next to or above the gym, here you should meet two girls.
4. Talk to the girl at the table and she should give you the Squirt Bottle.
5. Head north and, when you reach National Park, east towards Route 36. Keep following the path until you see a strange tree in the way.
   • You can also reach Route 36 by heading east near the gate to National Park on Route 35 and using Cut on the tree by the Bug Catcher trainer.
6. Apply the Squirt Bottle to the tree and a level 20 Sudowoodo will attack you.
7. Fight with the Sudowoodo.
   • You don't have to catch the Sudowoodo. You just have to somehow make it disappear.
   • Only one Sudowoodo comes into play unless you trade with someone to get one, so that's probably the only time you'll see it. Don't forget to save before you fight him, so you can reboot if things go wrong due to being defeated or defeated (if you wanted to catch him).
   • Sudowoodo is of the Rock type, not of the Grass type (even though it looks like a tree).
8. After defeating, capturing, or fleeing from the Sudowoodo, follow the path to the right and talk to the chubby guy closest to you. He will then give you the Rock SmashTM.

Method 2 of 2: Buy the TM

1. Go to Goldenrod City.
2. Go to the Goldenrod Department Store.
3. Go to the fifth floor of the building, the TM Corner.
4. Buy the TM for P $ 1000 from the retailer there.
   • If you don't have enough money, find some trainers you haven't fought with or sell some items you don't need.

Tips

• Don't forget to save after getting the TM (unless you want to do it again).
• Stock up on Poke Balls if you plan on catching Sudowoodo.
• If you already have the HM Fly you can just fly to where you need to go (you can only fly to cities, not routes).
• Before fighting Whitney, try to get at least three Pokémon to level 20.

Warnings

• Rock Smash is a TM in this game (not an HM like in the newer games), so think carefully before learning a Pokémon.
• When fighting Whitney, you should not use Fire, Insect, or Flying Pokémon because her Miltank has the Rock-type move Rollout, which is a 5-turn move that grows more powerful with each turn.
