Wave roof decking is perfect for a garden shed, gazebo, or workshop. Installation of such material is quick and easy without the involvement of specialists. All that is required of you is to get tools and materials, as well as read our article.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Installing Wave Slate

We cut the sheets to length. A circular saw or an electric jigsaw with a metal blade is suitable for this.

  1. 1
    • Usually the sheets are up to 9.8 meters long. The overhanging edge of the last sheet must be at least 45 cm.
  2. 2 We drill rough holes on the ridge. For this we use a drill with a diameter of 4.75 mm.
    • The distance between the holes at the edges and sides of the sheets should be 15 - 20 cm.
  3. 3 Installation of sheets. The sheets are stacked directly onto the girders fixed to the rafters, starting at the outer edge.
    • Cover or seal the edges with a wooden or plastic strip that fits under the sheet on each side. This will prevent the entry of rain, wind and vermin.
  4. 4 Secure the sheets. Drill holes and use 10X5.2cm screws with polycarbonate washers.
    • Move across the entire roof until it fully overlaps, while the overlap on the previous sheet should be at least 5.5 cm.
    • Adjust the overlap so that the finishing sheet fits to the roof without the need for longitudinal trimming.
  5. 5 Cover the opposite side. If you have a double-sided roof (and not one slope), then repeat the installation process on the other side of the roof, remembering to install the wave ridge at the convergence of the sheets.

Method 2 of 2: Choosing a Roofing Material

  1. 1 Choose the best option for wave roofing: PVC / fiberglass or metal. They can have different lengths, while the nominal width will always be 66 cm.All materials have both advantages and disadvantages:
  2. 2 PVC slate. The advantage of PVC / polycarbonate roofing material is the transparency of the sheets. They are able to let in daylight.
    • If cost is critical, PVC is cheaper than sheet metal.
    • PVC retains heat from the sun better, while sheet metal acts as a kind of "radiator".
    • Some types of PVC coatings are translucent, but they filter ultraviolet rays and can have different colors.
    • The disadvantages of PVC include less durability, noise during rain, and the possibility of breaking in strong winds.

  3. 3 Metal roofing. Durability is one of the key qualities of corrugated metal. Modern sheets of galvanized steel or aluminum do not rust and can last up to 100 years.
    • When it rains, a metal coated roof is quieter than PVC slate.
    • The metal roof does not rot, does not burn (a big plus for fire hazardous areas), insects cannot damage it.
    • Disadvantages include susceptibility to indentations and dents during installation and during hail. The cost of such material is also much higher.

Tips

  • When covering the terrace overhang, use a roofing sealant to install the wave slate joining sheet to the wall. Observe the instructions of the sealant manufacturer.
  • Pre-lay the sheets on the ground in the same way as you are going to lay them on the roof. This will make it easier to calculate the correct overlap.
  • Instead of a circular saw or jigsaw with a metal blade, you can use a sturdy garden shears or metal shears to cut sheets to length.
  • When constructing the roof frame, the distance between the rafters should not exceed 61 cm, and between the girders - 90 cm.
  • Both types of roofing material can be used together to create a deck that is able to let in sunlight, just like using transparent or white corrugated fiberglass sheets.

Warnings

  • To prevent leakage, do not drill screw holes in the grooves between the ridges.
  • Try not to stand or walk on sheets, standing on stairs or scaffolding and doing work from the side.
