This article shows you how to convert Microsoft Word documents with DOCX to DOC format. DOCX files were introduced in 2007, so it cannot be opened with some older versions of Word that only support DOC files; Fortunately, you can use the new version of Word to convert DOCX files to DOC. If you don't have Microsoft Word, you can use an online text converter.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: On Windows
Open the DOCX file in Word. Double-click the DOCX file to open in Microsoft Word.
- You can also double-click the DOCX file, select Open with ... (Open with…), and click Word.
Click File (File) in the upper-left corner of the Word window. A menu will appear on the left side of the page.
Click Save As (Save As) in the middle of the pop-up menu on the left side of the window.
Double-click This PC (This computer) is in the middle of the window. The screen will display the "Save As" window.
Give the DOC file a new name. Enter any name for your DOC version file.
Click the "Save as type" drop-down box near the bottom of the "Save As" window to see your options.
Click Word 97-2003 Document in the selection list. Format Word 97-2003 Document file that has the DOC extension.
Select a save folder. You will select one of the folders on the left side of the window to save the text.
Click Save (Save) in the lower-right corner of the window. This will save the DOC version of the text in the selected folder. advertisement
Method 2 of 3: On a Mac
Open the DOCX file in Word. In most cases, you just need to double-click the DOCX file to open it in Word.
- You can also click once on the DOCX file to select and then click File (File), select Open With (Open with), and select Word in the currently displayed menu.
Click File in the top left corner of the screen to open a list of options.
Click on options Save As ... (Save as…) in the menu File. The screen will show the "Save As" window.
Give the DOC file a new name. Enter whatever name you want to give the DOC version of the file.
Click the "File Format" drop-down box near the bottom of the window to see your options.
Click on options Word 97-2004 Document in the currently displayed list. As such, the file will be saved in DOC format.
Select a save folder. You will select one of the files on the left side of the window to save the converted text.- You can click on the "Where" drop-down box and select a folder here.
Click the button Save (Save) in blue in the lower-right corner of the window. This will save the DOC version of the text in the selected save folder. advertisement
Method 3 of 3: Use an online converter
Open an online text converter by visiting https://document.online-convert.com/convert-to-doc from your computer's web browser.
Click the button Choose file (Select File) is grayed out at the top of the page. This will open a File Explorer (on Windows) or Finder (on a Mac) window.
Select your DOCX file. Go to the folder containing the DOCX file you want to convert, then click once to select it.
Click Open (Open) in the lower-right corner of the window. This will upload the DOCX file to the converting page.
Scroll down the screen and click options Convert files (Convert files) near the bottom of the page to start converting files.
Click the button Download The light green (download) is to the right of the file's name after the conversion is complete. This will download the file to your computer.
- Depending on your browser settings, you will have to choose a save directory or verify the download before downloading the DOC file.
Advice
- DOC files are compatible with online text viewing services like Google Docs.
Warning
- If a DOCX file has an advanced format (such as fonts, colors, images or icons) that is not supported by the DOC format, that format will not be displayed in the DOC version of the file. This can cause formatting errors, such as misplaced text.
