This wikiHow teaches you how to use Instagram's search function. You can search for everything on Instagram - from specific topics and hashtags to users - on both the mobile app and the desktop site.

Method 1 of 2: On a mobile

1. Open Instagram. Tap the Instagram app icon, which resembles a multicolored square camera. This will open your Instagram home page if you are logged into your account.
   • If you are not signed in to Instagram, please enter your email address (or phone number or username) and password before continuing.
2. Tap the "search" Tap the search bar. It's at the top of the screen.This will open your on-screen keyboard and the filter tabs will appear at the top of the screen.
3. Choose a filter. At the top of the "Search" page, tap one of the following tabs:
   • Top - Shows a list of the most popular (or relevant) people, tags and places that match your search.
   • Accounts - Limits search results to people with usernames that match your search query.
   • Tags - Limits search results to hashtags that match your search query.
   • Place - Limit search results to locations that match your search.
4. Enter your search term (s). Enter what you want to search for and tap Search on the keyboard.
   • On Android, you can tap Enter or a magnifying glass icon instead of Search.
   • When searching for tags, you do not need to include the pound sign (#) in your search.
   • You may have to tap the search bar again after choosing a filter for the keyboard to reappear.
5. Check out the results. To do this, scroll through the list of search results.
   • You can open a result (for example the list of a hashtag or a user profile) by tapping on it.

Method 2 of 2: On desktop

1. Open Instagram. Go to https://www.instagram.com/ in your computer's web browser. This will open your Instagram homepage if you are logged in.
   • If you are not yet logged into Instagram, click the link login and enter your account information to continue.
2. Click on the search bar. This is at the top of the page, to the right of the "Instagram" heading.
3. Enter your search term (s). Enter the name, word, or location you want to search for.
4. View the search results. As you type, you will see a drop-down menu below the search bar; this is where your search results will be displayed. You can scroll down through the search results to search them.
   • If you click on a search result, it will be opened.

Tips

• The search results that Instagram shows are affected by your current location, friends list, the content you like, and more.

Warnings

• Make sure to use the correct filter when searching for a specific item (e.g. a person). For example, if you put a person's username on the tab Tags you will not find the person you are looking for.
