A collapsible metal crate is a great way to provide your dog with a safe place to travel. They are fairly lightweight, making them easy to carry and transport. They are also easy to clean, giving your dog a clean, comfortable and safe place to stay while away from home. To use a collapsible crate, you just need to know how to unfold it and how to fold it back up when you're done using it.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Preparing the crate

  1. Remove all objects from the crate. You cannot leave anything in the crate when it is folded. This includes blankets and pillows, food and water bowls, toys and other things that you and your dog have put in them.
    • The bedding should also be removed. You can usually remove these by sliding them out through a small opening at the bottom of the crate, which is how you placed it in there.
  2. Use a clean cloth to wipe the crate, including the bedding. If the crate is a bit dirty, use a non-toxic cleaning agent. Now is a good time to give it a nice clean. If the other objects are dirty, this is also a good time to clean those too. Blankets and pillows can be washed, as can any stuffed animals and fabric toys. Food and water bowls can be washed with the rest of the dirty dishes, in that sink or dishwasher. Other toys can be cleaned with regular soap and water and rinsed well.
  3. Close all doors of the crate. This also includes the front door and any opening at the side and top. Make sure they are locked with the included latches.
    • The crate will not fold properly if the doors are not properly closed and locked.

Part 2 of 2: Disassembling the crate

  1. Consult the manual for your specific model. Since the folding process can vary by model and manufacturer, it is good to read the instructions that come with the crate. If you no longer have the instructions or if the crate never had them, you can contact the manufacturer to request them.
  2. Fold down the crate's shorter side panels. Find the clips securing the short side panels to the top of the crate. Push the wire on top of the panel to open these clamps.
  3. Detach the sides of the crate. You do this by disconnecting the latches that attach the short side panels (at the front and back of the crate) to the long panels. Push in the short side panels while pulling out the long panels. This should release the mounting latches, causing the panels to separate from each other.
    • Do this for both the front and rear short panel.
  4. Lift the top slightly and push the side inward. Rest it on the bottom of the crate. Do the same for the other short side.
  5. Push one of the long sides down to the floor. This will cause the bench to collapse itself. The top will be on one side and should be folded on top of the folded crate.
  6. Lock the folded crate. Use the latches attached to the crate. These ensure that the crate does not fold out during transport.

Tips

  • Keep your crate in combination with a large bag, where you keep all the objects you have removed from the crate. Having familiar items and toys can help your dog feel more comfortable when you use the crate again.
