- 1 Buy avocados according to your preferences.
- Buy Hass, Lamb Hass, Gwen, Reed, or Sharwil for a more nutty flavor.
- Choose Bacon and Zutano for a lighter flavor.
- 2 Choose an avocado based on its degradability to peel.
- Pinkerton avocados are best peeled.
- Ettinger avocados are the hardest to peel.
- 3 Buy avocados based on their oil content.
- The avocados with the highest oil content are Hass, Pinkerton, Sharwil and Fuerte varieties.
- This buying method is suitable for those who plan to use avocados for health or beauty purposes.
- 4 Review the ripeness metrics for each avocado variety.
- The avocado is an oval-shaped Bacon with smooth, green skin that darkens slightly as the avocado ripens. Avocados of this variety can be purchased from late fall to spring.
- Fuerte and Ettinger avocados come in pear shape, with a smooth, green skin that stays that way when the avocado is ripe. Harvesting of these varieties is from late autumn to spring.
- The Gwen avocado is similar to the Hass avocado, but slightly larger in size. Their skin is green, pimply, turns into a dull green when the avocado ripens.
- Hass and Lamb Hass are oval shaped avocados that turn dark green, deep purple and black when ripe. You can buy them all year round.
- Pinkerton avocados are very long and pear-shaped with medium green skin that turns dark green when ripe. The crop is harvested from early winter to spring.
- Reed avocados are round with thick, shiny skin. They do not change color when ripe. Available only from summer to early autumn.
- Sharwil avocados are similar to Fuerte avocados, but are more oval in shape. The skin of this avocado variety is yellow-green.Turns completely green when the avocado is ripe.
- Zutano avocados grow in the shape of a pear, have a shiny yellow-green skin that remains so when the avocado ripens. This variety can be purchased from September until early winter.
