Applique is a method of attaching certain patterns to the stitch. To sew on the applique, you will need to have a needle and thread with you. Appliques are often used to decorate blankets, pillowcases, and garments.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Cutting the applique

  1. 1 Select the shape for your applique that you will sew to the fabric. Get the pattern you want from a book, or buy your favorite pattern at a craft store. As a trial option, you should focus on the application of a simple form.
  2. 2 Transfer the outlines of the appliqué to a square of freezer paper. Place the paper with the glossy side down on top of the desired picture and trace its outlines with a pencil. Cut out the pattern with paper scissors.
  3. 3 Heat the iron to medium heat. Place the patch of fabric from which you will cut the applique, face up, on the ironing board. Place the prepared pattern on top of it with the glossy side down.
    • Iron the pattern with an iron. The shiny paper will stick slightly to the fabric, so you can easily cut the applique.
  4. 4 Trace the contours of the pattern, departing 6 mm from its edges. You will fold up the seam allowances while sewing on the appliqué to the fabric.
    • Use a cotton fabric for your first applique. It is thin and folds easily.
  5. 5 Use sharp fabric scissors to cut the part along the lines you have drawn. If you subsequently compose an appliqué from several parts, using freezing paper as a basis for the patterns, then you will need to cut out the parts of the patterns at the same time so that they all fit together exactly.

Part 2 of 3: Preparing the fabric

  1. 1 Purchase a spool of cotton sewing thread to sew on your appliqué. The color of the threads must match the color of the applique, but it does not have to match the color of the fabric to which the applique is sewn.
  2. 2 Prepare a basic fabric (pillowcase, bag, garment). It is best to sew the applique to one layer of fabric, even before the item is finished sewing. This will prevent your stitches from showing in the finished garment.
  3. 3 Spread out the fabric. Select the location of the applique. Pin the applique to the fabric along with the pattern stuck to it with small sewing pins.
    • Place the pins every 1.5-2.5 cm so that the appliqué does not move while sewing.
    • The freezer paper pattern will guide you while sewing. You need to tuck the allowance made strictly to the edge of the pattern.
  4. 4 Insert a long thread into the needle. Take a thread twice the length you need to sew. Tie a knot at the end of the thread.
  5. 5 Sit back. Most people prefer to sew on appliques while sitting in a chair. You can easily spread the fabric in your lap and, if necessary, rotate it as work progresses.
    • To avoid injuring your hands, use a thimble.

Part 3 of 3: Sewing on the applique

  1. 1 Secure the thread to the fabric, bringing it from the wrong side to the right side.
  2. 2 Do not start sewing from the corner, but from some curved side of the appliqué.
  3. 3 Use blind stitches when folding and sewing on the appliqué edge. Place them 3 mm apart. http://www.marthastewart.com/276214/how-to-applique-by-hand/ref> The essence of the blind stitch is that it is hidden between two layers of fabric.
  4. 4 Keep the needle parallel to the fabric to keep the stitches small. Insert a needle into the appliqué fabric at the edge of the pattern, hook just a few threads and pull the entire needle and thread forward.
    • When sewing on an appliqué by hand, the goal is to sew around the edge of the pattern, tucking in the existing allowance.
  5. 5 Place the needle back into the main piece of fabric. Help yourself with a toothpick when tucking the allowances around the pattern.
  6. 6 Repeat stitching around the entire perimeter of the appliqué. Take your time so that your applique is tucked neatly around the edges. In the corners, try to stitch as often as possible.
  7. 7 When you get to the starting point of the applique, tie a knot and cut the thread. Remove the freezer paper from the fabric.
