Nothing darkens a picnic or a day in nature like an invasion of wasps. Use a natural or store-bought insect repellent to keep wasps away and get rid of any food that may have attracted them. If you can't scare off the wasps, try getting rid of them with soapy water, setting traps, or calling a pest control officer.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: How to scare wasps away from home

  1. 1 Repair cracks in your home. This will prevent wasps that live nearby from entering the house. Look for holes in window frames, cracks in the edges of cladding, or where electrical wiring enters. Then seal the holes with a suitable sealant, sealing the frames and filling the voids in the cladding or in the power cable opening.
    • If a hornet's nest is found in one of the cracks or holes, do not cover it. Some wasps are able to gnaw through a wooden wall and get into the house that way! Better call a professional exterminator to deal with it himself.
  2. 2 Do not leave trash cans open. Wasps tend to be attracted to yards with a lot of food waste, so if you don't close the trash cans tightly enough, they can attract wasps. Make sure the tank cap is securely attached and do not leave the tank open for a long time.
  3. 3 Don't leave sweet-smelling food anywhere. This also applies to the nectar in some bird feeders. Since wasps are attracted to anything that smells sweet, the presence of such things in the yard increases the risk of a wasp invasion.
  4. 4 Don't delay cleaning up after a picnic. Since wasps are mainly attracted to food, the lack of food will avoid encountering them. Throw away all trash and close containers that still contain food.

Method 2 of 3: Using natural repellents

  1. 1 Mix the essential oils of clove, geranium and lemongrass. Add a few drops of each type of oil to a spray bottle with water and dish soap. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. Treat those areas of the house that you think attract wasps (and also under the eaves and above the porch).
    • Do not spray just about anything, as one sprayer will not end up and your costs will increase significantly. Spray mostly where the nests used to be.
    • If you don't want to bother mixing, buy wasp repellent from a hardware store.
  2. 2 Grow repellent plants. Wasps prefer to stay away from some plants because they hate their smell. Plant some of these plants near where you spend a lot of time - in front of your porch or in your backyard - to ward off wasps. Peppermint, thyme, eucalyptus and citronella will not only ward off wasps, but also give your garden a pleasant scent!
  3. 3 Use wasp traps. Since wasps are territorial insects, they will not build a nest within 6 meters of another nest. Hang one trap on each side of the house to ward off wasps.

Method 3 of 3: How to get rid of wasps

  1. 1 Mix soap and water. Pour 30 ml of dish detergent into a spray bottle with water. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients until the solution starts to foam a little. Stand as far away from the wasp nest as possible and spray it with a sprayer.
  2. 2 Use a wasp trap. Make your own trap by cutting off the top of a 2 liter bottle. Spray the inside of the bottle with a little sweetened water and insert the inverted top of the bottle into the bottom of the bottle.Glue both pieces together and leave the bottle in the yard. Wasp traps can be purchased at the store.
  3. 3 Call a pest control officer. This is especially important if you are allergic to a wasp sting. If so, or if you find a large nest, then call a professional exterminator.

Warnings

  • If you are allergic to wasp stings, have someone else get rid of them or call a professional.
