1 Find a suitable surface. You will need to raise the vehicle to remove the axle shaft bearings, so never park it on uneven surfaces. The surface must be flat and stable. A relatively flat concrete surface in a garage may be ideal; downhill road - will not work.
  • 2 Apply the parking brake. The wheels should be locked when you raise the vehicle and, more importantly, when you remove the bearings.
  • 3 Raise the car with a car jack.
    • There are several different types of car jacks that differ slightly. The principle of operation of the vast majority of jacks (including those with which, as a rule, every car is equipped) is that due to the transformation of the applied force (using the handle), its upper part is lifted. As it rises, it touches the surface of the load and begins to push it.
    • With regard to the jack, the most important thing (after finding a flat surface) is to install it correctly.Your vehicle manual should provide information on where to install the jack, so check it out. If the jack builds up pressure in the wrong place, it can damage the door, break wires or break the washer tank.
  • 4 Place a jack stand under the vehicle. If you are going to climb under the car (and this will need to be done), then instead of the usual car jack, it is recommended to use lifting supports. Jacks are generally quite narrow and unstable, so they are more suitable for quick tire changes. It is extremely dangerous to use a car jack for this purpose, therefore it is not permissible.
    • The jack stand must be placed under the machine frame itself. You cannot place a support under a fuel, oil tank or other weak point that simply deforms under the weight of the car. Obviously, for this work, you need to install them away from the location of the semiaxes. (More details here)
    • Raise all 4 wheels of the vehicle. This will make it easier for you to remove the axle shaft bearing. It is also necessary from a security point of view. If you lift only one wheel or one side of the vehicle, the vehicle may fall over due to instability.
  • Part 2 of 2: How to Remove the Axle Bearing

    1. 1 Remove pallets and covers, if present.
      • Remove the engine sump (also called the crankcase), if present. It is located under the engine and usually prevents access to the axle shafts. (Note that some vehicles do not have it, and some once had it until it was removed.)
      • Remove the transmission pan.
      • Remove the plastic shroud covering the link hangers.
    2. 2 Remove the tires. It will be difficult for you to reach the axle shaft bearings unless you remove the tires first. You will probably want to replace several bearings at once (after all, if one is worn out, then the other on the same axle will probably wear out soon too), so remove all relevant tires. (More details here)
    3. 3 Remove the brake pads from the caliper and then unscrew the caliper itself. A caliper is a device that presses the brake pads against the brake disc (in a disc brake). They are usually bolted, so remove the bolts.
      • The caliper is attached to the brake system. It creates hydraulic pressure, which ensures the operation of the calipers. There is no need to disconnect the caliper from the brake system. Set it aside and you don't need to completely remove it.
    4. 4 Disengage the parking brake. The parking brake is associated with the parts to be removed. You do not need to disconnect it, just disconnect it.
    5. 5 Remove the brake disc. When assembled, it is usually connected to the brake pads. The brake disc is fastened with bolts, unscrew them and remove it. In some cases, you may need a hammer to loosen the fastener.
    6. 6 Remove the axle shaft bearings using special tools. This will separate the bearing from the axle by sliding them apart.
      • In order to remove the axle shaft bearing, you may need to use an impact wrench or drill, or special tools may be sufficient. Please read the instructions that came with the tools before using them.
      • Some axle shaft bearings can only be removed with an impact wrench. Recognize your model type so that you can find the right tools before starting a repair.

    Tips

    • If you do not have enough skills to repair cars, then you can use the services of a specialist or ask a friend who understands cars to help you. If it is not repaired correctly, you can not only damage the car, but also get injured.

    Warnings

    • Roller bearing housings are often quite fragile and can shatter like glass if you use force to remove them. Before starting work, ensure the safety of your eyes by wearing protective equipment.

    What do you need

    • Special tools for bearing removal / replacement
    • Torque wrench (if required)
    • Socket wrench
