In this article, we will show you how to convert a speed value from miles per hour to kilometers per hour. This requires basic knowledge of mathematics and a calculator.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Explaining the Units of Measure
- 1 Remember what a mile is. A mile is a unit of measure for length (distance), once equal to a thousand double steps of Roman soldiers. This value has changed over time, but today the mile is 5280 feet.
- 2 Remember what a kilometer is. A kilometer is a metric unit of measure for length. In this system, each unit is a multiple of 10 of the previous unit. 1 km = 1000 m.
- 3 Remember what speed is. To calculate speed, it takes not only distance (length), but also time. Speed is measured in miles / hour or in km / hour, that is, how many miles or kilometers an object will travel or will pass in 1 hour. So the speed is (X miles) / (1 hour) or (X km) / (1 hour).
Part 2 of 2: Converting from mph to km / h
- 1 Convert miles to kilometers. Since miles and kilometers are two different units of measurement, you must first convert miles to kilometers. Remember: 1 mile = 1.6093440 km.
- To convert kilometers to miles, use the ratio 1 km = 0.6214 miles.
- 2 Find the speed in km / h. You have converted miles to kilometers. You will now need the original mph speed value. For example, let's convert the speed to 95 mph.
- 3 Multiply the original speed value by 1.60934. You will get the speed in km / h. In our example: 95 x 1.60934 = 152.887 km / h.
- To convert km / h to mph, multiply the original speed, measured in km / h, by 0.6214. In our example: 152.887 x 0.6214 = 95 mph.
Tips
- Please note that the km / h value is always greater than the equivalent mph value.
- The speedometers of some Western cars have two scales for measuring speed: "miles per hour" and "kilometers per hour".
- Speed is measured in "miles per hour" in the United States, Liberia, Myanmar and the UK (although all other values in the UK are measured in metric units).
