Patio stones can sag on unstable ground. This is usually caused by an incorrect drainage system. The only way to fix this once and for all is to strengthen the soil so that the water does not stagnate. If your patio is in the lowlands or at the bottom of your yard, it might be worth considering redecorating your patio.

Steps

  1. 1 Remove the problem stone and any stones that surround it.
  2. 2 Dig 8 cm (6 inches) of soil (if this is too much work for you, rent a Bobcat (mini excavator).
  3. 3 To ensure proper drainage, cover with 5 cm of rough stone. Try to level it well.
  4. 4 Add 3-5 cm of sand or fine gravel.
  5. 5 Remove the top layer with a straight plank, using a level as a guide. Add a little more sand to the base of the stone tile, taking into account possible shrinkage.
  6. 6 Place the stones back where they were.
  7. 7 After placing the stones, add some sand to the gaps between them and sweep away the excess with a broom - this will prevent them from shifting and will also help reduce the amount of weeds growing between the stone tiles.

Tips

  • The stones will settle a little after this repair; to prevent this from happening, you can prop them up at the right level.

Warnings

  • It will take you a long time and the work itself may be more time consuming than it sounds.
  • NOTE: Before you start digging, even if you think it is safe, it is best to contact the gas and utility services (for example, 04) to avoid gas line breakage and electric shock, which could be fatal! Also check your site plan to find out where the sewer lines go. Damaging the sewer lines will not be pleasant, you can harm the environment and will have to pay dearly for their repair!
