The GED, which stands for General Educational Development, is an exam organized by the American Board of Education (ACE) to decide if you have a similar level of knowledge. equivalent to high school or not. GED is accepted by many universities, vocational schools, and companies in lieu of a high school diploma. Please continue to refer to this article for information on how to prepare for the GED exam.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Master the basics of GED

1. 

   Learn about your local GED requirement for a GED. Usually, you need to be 16 years old and not attending a school. Different regions will have different rules.

   Know what the GED entails. GED tests your knowledge in 5 areas: writing skills, math, social studies, history, science, and reading.
   • The writing test consists of two parts. The first part examines grammar, wording, spelling and capitalization, and the next part is writing essay based on specific suggestion or question.

     

   • The math test includes arithmetic, measurement, basic algebra, geometry, numerical coefficients, trigonometry, and analysis of graph data, as well as exams. This test is also divided into two parts.

     

     
     
   • Social studies include geography, civics, politics, and economics.

     

   • Science tests include life science, physical science, and earth science.

     

     
     
   • The reading test will test sentence structure, comprehension and language use.

   Be aware of the specific time period for each exam. The GED exam will last for 7 hours and 45 minutes.Depending on which test center you choose, you might want to break the test into smaller sections that you can test over several days, instead of trying to complete the entire test at once.
   • The first written exam will include 50 questions that you must answer in 80 minutes, and the second written exam will give you 45 minutes to plan, write and edit your essay.

     

   • Each math section consists of 50 questions with a working time of 90 minutes.

     

   • You must complete 50 social studies questions in 70 minutes.

     

   • Science has 50 questions that you must answer in 80 minutes.

     

   • The reading test consists of 40 questions with a working time of 65 minutes.

   Understand the scoring system. The score for each subject will range from 200 to 800. To be able to pass the exam, your total score must be 2250, and at least 410 points for each subject. The above image is for illustration only! advertisement

Method 2 of 3: Prepare for the GED Exam

1. 

   Start studying. A few months before you plan to take the GED test, you should start studying for the exam using the GED exam guidebook or from an online source.
   • Take a mock test. This method will help you discern areas in which you need to pay extra attention.

   Maintain good study habits. This is the key factor for success in the GED exam. At the same time every day, sit in a familiar position and study hard!
3. Consider seeking outside help. Almost every community that offers adult education is usually linked to a job search center or one that offers a certificate or university degree exam.
   • In Vietnam, many English language centers or universities also offer GED preparation courses. The course will provide you with exam study tips, essential information and practice exams. You can find more information about exam preparation courses here.

     

   • If you are unable to directly register for the GED test preparation class, you can take the exam preparation online.

     

4. Develop exam strategy. Focusing your attention for 7 hours is not easy. You will need to have a plan to complete the test before you enter the exam room.
   • Never stop practicing. Get used to the feeling of sitting at the exam desk and timing yourself.

     

   • Talk to people who have also taken the GED exam before and get their advice.

     

   • Most importantly, you need to be prepared. If you have studied for each subject and did well for the mock test, your actual test date will go quite smoothly.

Method 3 of 3: Exam for GED

1. 

   Sign up for the contest. You can search for GED test centers in your area and register for the exam at the right time.
   • You must take the GED test in person at the test center. You cannot take the test online.

     

   • Remember to give yourself enough time to fully prepare for the exam. You should schedule the GED exam a few months in advance.
   • Usually, you can register for the test online or download the application form to your computer, print it out, fill out the information and then submit it.

     

   • If you have special needs, you should state it on the application form. The exam center will address your needs.

2. 

   Exam. Come early and use the technique you have practiced to complete the test.
   • If you have arranged to take the test on several different days, be sure to complete each section of the test.
   • Follow your administrator's instructions so that you will not be disqualified from exam for that day.

3. 

   Get results. Each test center has a different method of reporting results. Occasionally, you will need to contact the center to receive test scores, and in other cases the test results will be sent home.

4. 

   Retest. If you don't pass, after a while, you can take the test again. You should check the requirements in your area and refer to the times when the test center will hold the test again. advertisement

Advice

• Arrive 10 minutes early before the test; you won't feel rushed and sometimes the test center will be quite crowded.
• Get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, especially during the exam week.
• Read a variety of materials in your spare time, including novels, newspapers and magazines in English. They will help you to improve your reading comprehension skills and general knowledge of the English language.
• You should find a calculator that you will use on the GED exam and familiarize yourself with its function first.

Warning

• Avoid GED exam without first reviewing. You won't be prepared and will be disappointed with the results.
