With VLC Player compatible with most browsers, you can view most VOB files. On Windows, you can use MPC-HC with similar features. If you have a Plex media server, convert the VOB file to MKV format for easy viewing without any loss of quality. You can burn VOB files to disc and play with regular DVD player. You cannot view VOB files if they are encrypted.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Use VLC Player

  1. Open a web browser and go to . VLC Player is a free, open source video player that can play almost any video format, including VOB.

  2. Click the "Download VLC" button. The computer will load an installer compatible with the operating system. If you downloaded the wrong installer (eg you have a Mac but downloaded the EXE file), click the operating system icon below the download button.
  3. Run the VLC installer after downloading. This is the action that will start the installation process. You can find the file in the Downloads folder or in the Downloads section of your web browser.

  4. Follow the instructions to install VLC. Operation on Windows and macOS will be a little different, you can keep the default settings.
  5. Start VLC Player. After VLC is installed, start the program in the Start menu (Windows) or the Applications folder (macOS).

  6. Click the "Media" (Windows) or "File" (macOS) menu. You will see a menu of options for what you want to play.
  7. Select "Open Folder" (Windows) or "Open File" (macOS). This will help you open the VIDEO_TS folder containing the VOB file.
  8. Access the directory containing the VOB file. This folder is usually named VIDEO_TS if ripped directly from a DVD.
  9. Open the selected folder and start playing the VOB file. When you open the folder, VLC Player will proceed to play the video as it did with a DVD. You can access DVD menus, special functions, lists and many other options. advertisement

Method 2 of 4: Using MPC-HC (on Windows)

  1. Determine whether you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows operating system. You must have this information to download the correct version of MPC-HC.
    • Press ⊞ Win+Pause or right-click "Computer" in the Start menu and select "Properties".
    • Look for the "System type" item in the displayed window. If you see "64-bit" or "x64", you're using a 64-bit operating system. If you see "32-bit", "x86", or don't see the number of bits mentioned, you're running a 32-bit operating system.
  2. Visit the MPC-HC website. MPC-HC is free, open source media player software that can play VOB files and many other video formats. You can download it for free at the site
    • MPC-HC is only supported on Windows.
  3. Click the "Installer" link for the Windows operating system. The machine will begin downloading the program's installer from the MPC-HC website.
  4. Run the installer and follow the instructions. The file size is small, so the download time is very fast. Once downloaded, open the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install MPC-HC. You can keep the default settings.
  5. Start MPC-HC after installation. You can either boot from the installer or find a shortcut on the desktop.
  6. Click on the "File" menu and choose "Quick Open File" (Quick opening of file). This option will open the file selection menu.
  7. Access the folder containing the VOB file. When ripping DVD content into VOB format, you will have VIDEO_TS folder containing all VOB files. Navigate to this folder on the file selection menu.
  8. Select the file "VIDEO_TS.ifo". This file will load the DVD content in order for you to use the menu and all other special functions.
    • You can select individual VOB files to play a portion of the DVD.
  9. Open the file. The program will play from the DVD player, load the exact VOB file when needed. advertisement

Method 3 of 4: Use Plex Media Server

  1. Download MakeMKV. Plex has difficulty opening VOB files, so you should use MakeMKV to convert the file to MKV format. The file will not lose quality, but you will lose access to the menu. The list remains the same.
    • Access and click on "Download Make MKV for Windows" to download the installer.
  2. Launch the installer and follow the instructions. You can keep the default settings. MakeMKV does not install any additional advertising.
  3. Start MakeMKV. You can boot from the installer or desktop shortcut.
  4. Click the "Open files" button. You can find this button in the upper left corner of the MakeMKV window. This button has a camcorder icon above the file.
  5. Access the folder containing the VOB file. If you split VOB files from DVD, they will be stored in the VIDEO_TS folder. Navigate to this folder on the file selection menu to see all the contents.
  6. Select the file "VIDEO_TS.ifo". This is the master file of all VOB files, helping the program play the files in the correct order. If you choose this file, MakeMKV will download the entire VOB file into an MKV file.
  7. Select the title you want to see. If it's a movie, it could be a full movie title. If a DVD has many episodes, you must create a separate MKV file for each episode to make selecting the episode on Plex easier.
    • You can select audio and add subtitles to the song. MKV supports many articles.
  8. Start the blending process. MakeMKV will create MKV based on the title and sound setting you just selected. Execution time depends on the size of the VOB file.
  9. Add the finished MKV to the Plex library. Plex can read and translate MKV codes quickly, so it's no problem choosing a new MKV file. In most cases, Plex will automatically find the correct information for the video. Learn how to set up a communication server using Plex for details. advertisement

Method 4 of 4: Burn VOB files to DVD

  1. Download ImgBurn. This free program allows you to create DVDs viewable from VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder. You can play a disc on any DVD player that supports burning. Visit ImgBurn's website to download the program.
    • If you choose a mirror link, make sure that the download link does not require downloading special download managers. Mirrors 5 and 6 are the safest links.
    • Avoid ImgBurn mirror (Mirror 7) because this installer comes with adware, you must decline during installation.
  2. Run the setup program. After downloading the installer, launch it in the Downloads folder. You can keep the default settings.
    • Carefully read each information displayed on the screen as the installer may contain adware depending on the mirror link you use to download the file.
  3. Start ImgBurn. Once installed, you can find the program shortcut on your desktop. You will see the ImgBurn main menu.
  4. Select "Write files / folders to disc" from the menu. This will open Build Mode to create the image file from the VOB, and then burn it to disk. Build Mode will keep the menus and functions of the original DVD.
  5. Click the "Browse for a folder" button. This will open a file browser. You can find this button to the right of the "Source" field.
  6. Select the VIDEO_TS folder. The VIDEO_TS folder contains the VOB file that you want to burn to DVD. Open this folder to load the VOB file into ImgBurn.
  7. Click the "Calculate" button. This button has a calculator icon, which you can find in the lower right corner of the screen. The size of the file will be determined by whether you will be using a single sided or double sided disc.
  8. Enter the recommended disc type. After calculating, you will see "Min. Req. Media" section. Here is how to choose a blank disc. Most movies are recorded to DVD ± R / RW disc.
  9. Click the "Options" tab. You will see disk options displayed.
  10. Select "ISO9660 + UDF" from the "File System" menu. The disc will be encrypted so that it can be viewed on a DVD player.
  11. Click the Labels tab. This option gives you a name to help the disc reader.
  12. Enter a name in the "ISO9660" field. You can choose any name, but no spaces can be used.
  13. Click on the "Copy" button next to the "ISO9660" field. The newly added name will be entered automatically in the corresponding fields (they must match).
  14. Click the "Build" button. This is the operation conducted to burn content to a blank DVD disc. The time depends on the burning program and the video size.
  15. Watch the DVD just burned. After you've burned the content to DVD, you can watch it on a variety of DVD players. Some players cannot read the recording media and cannot load videos. advertisement

Advice

  • You cannot copy VOB files directly from DVD because they are encrypted. It's useless to try to view an encrypted VOB file. If you are copying a DVD to a computer, you must use a DVD decoder to break the encryption. Please refer to the DVD ripping tutorials for more details.
