IPad apps are updated regularly, and installing the latest versions gives you access to a wide variety of features and get the best performance out of it. You can get updates for installed apps through the App Store. You can also set up iPad to automatically download updates.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Check for application updates

  1. Connect iPad to wireless network. You will need internet access to check for and download updates. If your iPad has a 4G connection, you can use it to download the updates, but this will be charged to your data plan's cost.
    • Open the Settings app and tap "Wi-Fi" to find and connect to a wireless network.

  2. Open the App Store. You can find it on one of the main iPad screens. This option is located in the Utilities folder.
  3. Click the "Updates" tab. You will find this item in the lower right corner of the screen. Metrics on the tab will show how many apps have the update available.

  4. Click "Update" next to the app to begin downloading the update. The app will be added to the queue for download. The applications will be updated one by one.
  5. Click "Update All" to install all available updates. You will find this button in the upper left corner of the screen. All apps with updates available will be queued for download.

  6. Please wait while updating the app. Once the app update is downloaded, the app icon will go gray on the home screen, and you'll see a progress indicator for this process. Application can be reused once the icon is back to normal.
  7. Update again if it fails. Usually the "Update All" function does not work correctly and some applications will only show the "Update" button again. You can either press "Update All" again or individually tap the "Update" button for each application.
  8. Troubleshooting updating apps. There are a few things you can try if the app doesn't update properly:
    • Double-click the Home button to open the App Switcher. Swipe up the App Store window to close it. Go back to the home screen and open the App Store. Try downloading the updates again.
    • Restart iPad. Press and hold the Power button until the Power slider appears. Use your hand to slide the slider and wait for the iPad to shut down. Turn it on again and then try to download the updates again.
    • Factory reset for iPad. If the updates still don't work, try a factory reset to clear the cache. Press and hold the Power and Home buttons until the device turns off. Continue holding both buttons until the Apple logo appears. Once your iPad restarts, try downloading the updates again from the App Store.

Part 3 of 3: Prioritize the order of app updates (iOS 10)

  1. Hold down a pending app with the iPad's stylus (iPad Pencil). 3D Touch only works on iPad devices running iOS 10, and you must use the iPad Pencil. Press firmly with the stylus on the app waiting to be downloaded.
  2. Select "Download priority" from the displayed menu. This will move the app to the next download location, just behind any apps that are currently updating.
  3. Wait for the app to finish loading. The download of the selected application starts immediately, as soon as the download is complete. advertisement
