The condition of vinyl records (such as LPs) has a direct effect on their sound quality. For the daily cleaning of your records, use a carbon fiber brush to remove the dust from the surface. To get a deeper clean, apply a liquid cleaning solution to the surface of the plate. Use a microfiber cloth to lightly scrub and dry the plate. You can also invest in a manual cleaning machine.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Remove light dust and deposits

  1. Use a ready-made solution. Record stores and music stores often sell cleaning products specifically designed for use on audio equipment. Check the ingredients of any cleaning products you buy to make sure you don't have a problem with all of the substances they contain. Make sure you follow the directions carefully as well.
    • Make sure to avoid household cleaners, such as Glassex. These cleaners are far too abrasive for records and will destroy the vinyl.
  2. Keep your records dry. Do not play or store a damp record. It's a myth that playing a wet record will reduce static build-up. Instead, using a plate with moisture on it can damage the grooves and create an even bigger mess to clean. Make sure to wipe the plates completely with a microfiber cloth or air dry on a cleaning mat.
  3. Touch them gently. Try to avoid touching the inner grooves of your records as much as possible. Instead, handle them by grasping the label or the edge of the record with your fingertips. The skin oil on your fingertips can attract dust to the grooves and make the plate more difficult to clean.
  4. Store them vertically. Make sure to place your plates vertically next to each other. If you lay them flat, you risk warping or bending. Leaning your plates to one side can also cause bending. So, place the plates firmly upright, with little space between each plate.

Tips

  • This may seem strange, but make sure to give new records a quick clean as well. They may have a fine coating of dust from storage or residues from production.

Warnings

  • Keep your records away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
