Eyeliner can give you a dramatic look without taking much time or effort to apply. Whether you choose a soft line or a dramatic stripe, with an eye pencil or eyeliner you can decorate your eyes in a few minutes. There are many different ways to apply eyeliner, so experiment to see what works best for you. Even if you've never put on eyeliner before, you can learn how to do it in minutes.

Method 1 of 6: Apply eyeliner with dots

1. Put on your normal makeup first. Always apply your eyeliner after you already have eyeshadow on, and then apply your mascara. Start with your foundation, blush, and eyeshadow before moving on to the eyeliner.
   • Have a pencil sharpener handy if you're using an eye pencil, or a clean brush for cream or liquid eyeliner.
   • To make sure your makeup lasts all day, apply an eyeshadow primer before applying the eyeliner. Smear the primer close to your lash line where you will be applying the eyeliner.
2. Think about what kind of look you want. Do you want a natural look during the day? Or smokey eyes when you go out? Think about the thickness of the line and whether you are going to apply it to your upper or lower lid, or both.
   • If you want something simple, make a thin line, and no wings, or very small wings.
   • If it could be a bit more dramatic, start with eyeshadow, then draw a thick line of wings.

Tips

• Do not apply your eyeliner with large stripes, opt for smaller stripes instead, as this will give you more control and a nicer line. This trick works with any type of eyeliner.
• If the eyeliner doesn't come off the pencil (if you don't get a line), heat it up with a hair dryer. Then you can apply it more easily. Just be careful not to melt the pencil.
• If you're having a hard time getting your eye makeup off, give it a try with baby oil and a cotton swab.
• Wash your brushes regularly with makeup remover or a mild shampoo.
• To wash off eyeliner, you can wet a tissue and wipe it gently over your skin.
• Applying eyeliner powder over an eyeliner pencil will help hold the eyeliner in place and soften the look.
• Instead of white eyeliner, you can draw a peach-colored line in your waterline, which will look more natural.
• Do not touch your eyes while wearing eyeliner, as this will spread it over your eyelid and hand.
• If your skin is very dry, fading will be more difficult, so you may want to apply a light cream to your face first and then wipe it off again. Then it is just damp enough to be able to smear the color over your skin.

Warnings

• Avoid sharing your eyeliner with others as it can transmit bacteria and infections from person to person. If you do need to divide, wipe the tip with a little makeup remover or alcohol and rinse off. Change eye makeup every 30-60 days to reduce the risk of infection.
• Drawing a line on the inside of the lower eyelid can cause eye infections and increase the chance of getting makeup in your eye.
• Don't apply too much eyeliner - nothing is better than too much.
