1. Use a spirit level to check that your painting is hanging straight. Place the spirit level along the top or bottom of the painting. If the bubble is in the center of the bowl, you can be sure that the painting is hanging straight. If the bubble is not in the center, carefully adjust the position of the painting until the painting is level.

Tips

• In many museums, works of art are mounted in such a way that the distance from the center of the artwork to the floor is approximately 140 to 150 cm.
• It is easier to hang a painting straight (and to keep it straight) if you use two hooks, nails or screws next to each other. After you have hung the painting from the two mounting points, you can still adjust the position with the spirit level.
• There are many ready-to-use systems on the market that allow you to hang paintings. For example, you can use a rail system, with which you can easily move paintings to a new location. You can then also add multiple paintings without having to drill new holes.

Warnings

• Always make sure the mounting is strong enough to withstand the weight of the painting.
• Be careful when drilling holes in a wall. There may be water or electrical cables in the wall. If necessary, use a pipe finder to find out whether there are pipes in the wall where you want to drill.
• Place the artwork in a different room while you are working. Otherwise the painting can become dusty or even damaged.
• Never hang a heavy object on a wall that cannot support that weight.
