A beautifully decorated Christmas tree makes your home cozy and cheerful during the Christmas season. Give your home a festive look in a few simple steps.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Put the lights in your tree

  1. Before you put the lights in the tree, check whether all the lights are still working. Detangle the lights and plug in the power cord. Replace any broken bulbs or buy a new string.
  2. Hang any ornaments that you want to stand out close to a light. This works best with shiny baubles, glassware, or metal decorations as they reflect the light the best.
  3. Sprinkle lametta over the branches to make your tree sparkle. Hang the lametta so that the Christmas tree lights shine on it. Make sure it is not on the lights because of possible fire hazard.
    • Do not use too much lametta, then you will no longer see the ornaments.
    • Colored lametta gives a slightly more modern look than the traditional silver ones.
  4. Create a natural look with rustic metal or glass ornaments. Spread spruce or pine cones over the tree.
    • Hang fake birds and fake leaves in the Christmas tree.
    • White lights work best with a natural look.
  5. Hang red, white, blue and orange colored decorations in the tree for a Dutch colored tree. Use glass and plastic ornaments and white lights and the tree will not look out of place in The Tower of our Prime Minister.
    • For an even more Dutch look you can also hang red, white, blue lights in the Christmas tree.
  6. Hang large, brightly colored baubles on the Christmas tree in front of a modern tree. Fashionable colors include lemon yellow, purple and bright pink.
    • Christmas lights with large pears, together with brightly colored small and large ornaments, give a more contemporary look.

Tips

  • You can find less mundane decorations for your Christmas tree at sale craft stores.
  • If you buy a real Christmas tree, make sure that the branches are evenly distributed over the tree. Avoid trees with large bare pieces without branches, you can hang less decorations and the tree will look strange.

Warnings

  • Be careful with glass decorations that may be broken, the shards are very sharp.
  • Do not connect too much to one power outlet, as this can lead to overheating and fire. Take a good look at what an extension cord can handle.
  • Note: If the lights get hot you could burn yourself or the tree could catch fire.
  • Don't leave the Christmas lights on all night. Turn off the lights when you go to bed; short circuit and overheating can cause fire. You also reduce your power consumption, which is better for your wallet and the environment.
  • Keep in mind that real candles in a tree are much more flammable than electric lights.

Necessities

  • A Christmas tree or other small fir (real or fake)
  • Christmas tree stand
  • Piece of plastic sheeting
  • Cloth for around the base of the tree
  • Christmas tree decorations
  • Beads and extra decoration (optional)
  • Garlands and bows (optional)
  • A star or other peak for the top of the tree.
