Whether your t-shirt has been tumble-dried or it's just not big enough, there are ways to stretch a cotton t-shirt to a size that fits you (within limits, of course). Cotton can be stretched slightly, especially when wet. So try some of the ideas below before throwing away your T-shirt in frustration.
To step
Method 1 of 7: Using conditioner
- Let the T-shirt dry. The shape of the chair will stretch the T-shirt nicely for you during drying.
Tips
- Stretching works best with 100% cotton T-shirts. If the T-shirt also contains fibers from polyester or other fabrics, it will be a lot stiffer and therefore more difficult to stretch.
- If you really like a T-shirt and want to keep wearing it, you can keep stretching it regularly. Just keep in mind that the dryer will undo all your work if you dry the T-shirt in it.
- You can also stretch the sleeves or neckline of a T-shirt in the same way. The neckline often stretches more easily, so be careful not to stretch it too much on your first try.
- Remember that stretching a T-shirt widthways often shortens it lengthwise. If you want the T-shirt to stay the same length, stretch the fabric by pulling on the shoulder seam and hem. Lay it out flat to dry, making sure the T-shirt has the correct proportions throughout.
- You can also use these methods with sweatshirts and other stretchable garments. However, be careful with these garments - they are more delicate than T-shirts.
