A White Russian is a classic creamy cocktail made with vodka, coffee liqueur, and cream or milk (or a combination of these). It is usually served in an Old-Fashioned (or rocks) glass with ice. The vodka and coffee liqueur are first poured into the glass (over ice cubes), after which it is topped off with cream (or milk and cream). The drink is usually not stirred, because the dark Kahlua and the vodka must remain at the bottom of the glass and under the top layer (milk / cream).

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of ice cubes
  • 30 to 45 ml of vodka
  • 15 to 45 ml of Kahlua
  • Cream, milk or a combination of both (to fill the glass)
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish (optional)

To step

  1. Fill a whiskey glass or a highball glass with ice.
  2. Pour the vodka into the glass. Use a measuring cup, pour it freehand or pour it from a mini bottle.
    • Mini bottles usually contain 50 milliliters. Use part or all of the bottle. To keep it simple, use the entire bottle.
  3. Pour the Kahlua into the glass. There is no need to stir, but some prefer to stir the alcoholic ingredients with a swizzle stick at this point.
    • The Kahlua can be poured before the vodka, but even if the Kahlua is poured second, it will still sink to the bottom, because it is heavier than the vodka.
  4. Refill the glass with the cream or the milk. The drink is usually not stirred after adding the cream / milk, as the alcoholic ingredients (especially the Kahlua) must remain in the bottom of the glass. The dark Kahlua should be clearly present at the bottom of the glass, contrasting with the milk. The vodka will not show as clearly as it is clear and will mix slightly with the milk.
  5. Garnish it with a single maraschino cherry as wished. The icing can rest on the surface of the drink itself, and will be supported by the ice cubes. For this, it is best to choose a cherry with a stem that has not been pierced with a toothpick.
  6. Serve the drink with a straw, if desired. The straw allows the alcoholic ingredients to be consumed from the bottom of the glass, or stir the drink if you prefer.

Tips

  • Replace the Kahlua with another coffee liqueur, such as Kona coffee liqueur or possibly a homemade version.
  • You make a Colorado Bulldog by adding a dash of Coca-Cola and stirring or shaking it in a shaker.
  • Top it off with almond milk instead of cream for a Nutty Russian!
  • To make a Black Russian, omit the cream (or the milk).
  • A Hot White Russian cocktail is made with freshly brewed coffee in addition to the Kahlua and the other ingredients and served in a mug. You make a Hot White Russian by heating a glass or mug and heating a mixture of coffee and cream (or milk or cream / milk) in a saucepan. Five parts of coffee to one part of cream is desirable. If you use milk, you can also use less coffee and more milk. Then put about 30 ml of Kahlua and 15 ml of vodka in the heated mug and add the coffee with cream / milk. Garnish it with whipped cream to your liking. Freshly whipped cream is best.
  • Mix the drink in a cocktail shaker and serve it in a cocktail glass. A shaken White Russian has a creamy head. However, this is not the classic or traditional way of making a White Russian, and it is better to call it a White Russian martini.
  • Add more Kahlua for a stronger coffee flavor.
  • Replace the cherries with hazelnuts for a tasty and classic garnish.
  • A variation on the typical white Russian: replace the cream / milk with Bailey's (or another Irish Crème liqueur).
  • Some recipes for a White Russian call for the addition of crème de cacao. If you use this, you can add grated chocolate for garnish.

Warnings

  • Baileys as a cream substitute is very tasty, but it doesn't really help you be a responsible drinker - but it is a lot more efficient. In essence, you are just drinking a full glass of liquor.
  • Be careful when giving this drink to diabetics or people with a milk allergy, as it contains both sugar (in the Kahlua) and milk (in the milk / cream).
  • Always drink alcohol in moderation.
